Good evening, everyone!...

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Nov 01 7:34 pm
Good evening! I just spoke to Santa. He is not in a very good mood yet.

Jamie.Idaho70's daughter @JC Wed Nov 01 7:35 pm
Well he better get his sh*t together! My Christmas lights are up and lit right now!

twp @twp Wed Nov 01 7:45 pm
I got a Costco card today: Some of the meat they sell is larger than my entire refridgerator!

For me, Chrome is the best browser to use with this chat room. Firefox for me has issues.

twp @twp Wed Nov 01 7:50 pm
I'm using Pale Moon browser, a FF clone.

It works very well.

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Nov 01 7:51 pm
Good evening EVERYONE!

Jerry...question. How many things that people can prep for are on your list now?

How many "possible" things...

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Nov 01 7:52 pm
For me, using Firefox and hitting refresh knocks me out and I have to log in again.
Jerry K7KKX @guest3072311 Wed Nov 01 7:53 pm
David, give me a second and I will check.

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Nov 01 7:53 pm
Thanks! But approximately is ok...

Honestly, the thing I'm most afraid of is that Jamie will get mad at me...

Jamie.Idaho70's daughter @JC Wed Nov 01 7:55 pm
Every man should always be afraid of a strong woman

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Nov 01 7:55 pm
AMEN!

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Nov 01 7:56 pm
Hello everyone

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Nov 01 7:56 pm
Hi Keith

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Nov 01 7:57 pm
I see Jamie is in rare form tonight

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Nov 01 7:57 pm
as always!

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Nov 01 7:57 pm
Yep
Jerry K7KKX @guest3072311 Wed Nov 01 7:57 pm
I prep with 213 primary possibilities in mind, plus another 22 things that can occur because of various disasters, and 24 more things that tend to be small, affecting fewer people, but possibly very serious to the one or two people, or family, that is experiencing those events.

Jamie.Idaho70's daughter @JC Wed Nov 01 7:58 pm
It's because I've spent 6 hours crocheting a blanket and it's only a foot long!! How did my grandmothers+ do this?!

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Nov 01 7:58 pm
David, am I calling on you first, then taking check ins?

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Nov 01 7:58 pm
OK Ken

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Nov 01 7:59 pm
David, am I calling on you first, then taking check ins?

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Nov 01 7:59 pm
Thanks Jerry

OK Again Ken

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Nov 01 7:59 pm
Ok to your OK
Jerry K7KKX @guest3072311 Wed Nov 01 8:00 pm
I am not afraid of a strong woman. I would rather have one around because the ones I know take a great deal of the load off my shoulders. My sisters indoctrinated me when I was still in middle school, and ever since then I have spoken respectfully to women, because if I do not, bad things seem to happen to me. That does not mean I am afraid. Just cautious.

twp @twp Wed Nov 01 8:01 pm
"caution" is the better part of valor...

Jamie.Idaho70's daughter @JC Wed Nov 01 8:01 pm
I bow to your sisters for teaching you the proper way
Jerry K7KKX @guest3072311 Wed Nov 01 8:04 pm

When deploying to a disaster such as a hurricane or earthquake where people are dead, injured. lost, and the infrastructure is destroyed alot of what helps is having teammates that you can count on. You each watch out for each other and very importantly team support helps you emotionally when you are down or overwhelmed by them supporting you and picklng you up.

I have been lucky enough to have experienced such support on my many deployments.

twp @twp Wed Nov 01 8:18 pm
Hear, Hear Idaho70

Jamie.Idaho70's daughter @JC Wed Nov 01 8:21 pm
Shoutout to my parents!
Jerry K7KKX @guest3072311 Wed Nov 01 8:22 pm
The only way most people have to deal with overwhelming situations is to prepare yourself for them, preferably with the help of experienced people. It will never be quite the same, but understanding that you will go through various feelings and even face death. It can be done. Thinking it through, multiple times, with the help of those that have gone through it. If you never give it a thought and something happens, people often make very poor decisions because they simply have no clue what they should do.
I really have to agree with Idaho. He summed it up nicely.

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Nov 01 8:29 pm
Good evening everyone...have a TERRIFIC week!

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Nov 01 8:30 pm
Rain tomorrow up here.

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Nov 01 8:30 pm
Stay dry...
Jerry K7KKX @guest3072311 Wed Nov 01 8:30 pm
David, Ken, where do you get your filaments for 3D printing?

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Nov 01 8:30 pm
Amazon for me...

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Nov 01 8:31 pm
I will try, suppose to last for about a week
Jerry K7KKX @guest3072311 Wed Nov 01 8:31 pm
What do you use mostly?

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Nov 01 8:31 pm
For my applications, I mostly use 1.75mm Carbon Fiber (black or white)
Jerry K7KKX @guest3072311 Wed Nov 01 8:32 pm
Hm... Is that not pretty expensive?

K7DWWDavid @K7DWWDavid Wed Nov 01 8:33 pm
Depends...pricing changes quite a bit...I look for sales and deals. Overall, the filaments are expensive... but not outrageous

Night everyone

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Nov 01 8:36 pm
Night night, time to go.

Jamie.Idaho70's daughter @JC Wed Nov 01 8:36 pm
sleep well, everyone
Jerry K7KKX @guest3072311 Wed Nov 01 8:37 pm

Evening Jerry

Ken...did you see the last stuff I sent?

Ken...are you going to post anything about tonight's topic here?

Everyone...tonight's topic is Li-Ion batteries...

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Oct 25 7:57 pm
I can post stuff...

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Oct 25 7:58 pm
Our solar batteries are Li=iron phosphate.

I believe there are several alternatives already in existence and available. For the longest term, at the moment are Nickle Iron batteries. Big and heavy, so mostly at-home power banks.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Oct 25 8:11 pm
Our solar system li-iron phosphate are the big batteries that are far safer than the Li-ion batteries. Our batteries do not burn, but in the case of a failure they kind of go phhhhttttt then a little puff of smoke and that is it.
Jerry K7KKX @guest3072311 Wed Oct 25 8:11 pm
Of course, what Ken was talking about are the AGM, regular lead-acid batteries, and one other lead-acid that I cannot remember.
Then the more esoteric types of batteries, or more accurately, power storage devices.
Jerry, Kilo Seven Kilo Kilo X-ray checking in from Winnemucca via chat.
One of the storage device that have been used in the past for both stationary and mobile needs are various types and sizes of flywheels.
Another unit that can store electric energy is super capacitors. Being used in small applications but I believe they could easily be built using very low cost components.
Elevated water storage tanks have also been used for both mechanical and electrical needs. Pump water when power is available and then let it drain through a micro hydro system. Or, it can turn a mechanical wheel to produce rotary energy for various tools and appliances.

There have been some very large lead-acid batteries used in submarines. They are cycled out by the US Navy regularly so many have been available in the past. Not sure if they still are. Low voltage, but 7,000 amp-hours of storage, each but it takes several to get to 12v, or 48v.
I do not think I said that, David.

Jerry K7KKX @guest3072311 Wed Oct 25 8:24 pm
There many other combinations of materials to store power. Most are not used in general service, but often in specialized service such as mercury hearing aid batteries.
A couple of other possibilities I want to experiment with are not actually batteries in that they do not store energy, but like solar PV and micro hydro are power generators.

Prepper Radio Net Chat 09/13/23

Ken...possible question to use with / after your paper...Those of you listening tonight that are members of ARES and SNARS, can you share how membership will provide benefits to preppers in the event of a serious emergency?...

Hi Curious...

Welcome JC and Dave

Hi Intrigued

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 7:37 pm

Hello!!!!

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 20 7:47 pm

David, I will say something about your question above. Call on me before you call for the initial round of check ins.

Hey Jerry, is your radio working with the repeater there in Winnemucca?

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 7:49 pm

Negative. Not yet. Though I will say I did not try to see if the repeater was working and just not connected to the system

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 20 7:49 pm

Key up the radio and listen for the repeater's squelch tail.

If your repeater is working and we don't hear you we will know the link is still down.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 7:50 pm

I forgot about tHAT. It was not last week because I did remember to check. I will get it out and try again.

Negative again.

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 20 7:55 pm

We will discuss Nevada Shakeout

Negative what? No repeater?

https://www.shakeout.org/nevada/

The Great Nevada ShakeOut - Get Ready!

https://www.shakeout.org/nevada/

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 7:56 pm

Negative test for squelch tail.

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 20 7:56 pm

Is there anyone you can contact locally about their repeater?

I will put it out on the noon net.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 7:58 pm

I talked to him hear while back. He said they were working on it best they could. He is going to let me know if/when the .067 repeater is up and when the ling is up, as well.

K7KBJ @kjuenke Wed Sep 20 7:58 pm

Ok

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:07 pm

I plan to be at Ft. Churchill.

Kilo Seven Kilo Kilo X-Ray Checking in from Winnemucca through NNPG chat. Jerry

twp @twp Wed Sep 20 8:10 pm

I also plan on being at Ft. Churchill.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:10 pm

Up here in the backwoods of the far north many if not most people are preppers to some extent. So being a member of the local radio club and ARES I have access to like minded people and thus people who can help and very importantly multiple information sources,

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:11 pm

I have not participated in a couple of the recent Big Nevada Shake-out events due to health issues. Bad enough that I simply could not do anything.

I heartily recommend the event with turning off or not using water, power, sewer, and the like.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:13 pm

Accurate information is vitally important during a disaster. Also ARES members are part of the County Emergency Management office and thus will be working in the EOC as well as being part of the information net.

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 8:13 pm

I'm still in a new area and though I know some of my neighbors are various levels of peppers, I haven't really opened up much with what we are doing. So not sure if any other are radio operators

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:13 pm

I understand that no one wants to lose the contents of their refrigerator or freezer, but simply not use them and cover them over. Do not turn off the natural gas if you have it or it is required to have the company come in to relight pilot lights.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:15 pm

Jamie, when talking to them mention we are Hams and most likely if they are they will say so.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:15 pm

For those two organizations, some of the members are vast resources of information on not only running a radio, but about the local systems that are available. They also know local shelters, where to get help and where to go if you can give help.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:15 pm

Or say you are interested in amateur radio

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 8:15 pm

That's a great idea, thanks dad!

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:16 pm

The main thing is their knowledge base for much more than just the radios. Antennas are critical to radio operation and many of them can give information and instruction to help one operate mobile and under emergency conditions.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:16 pm

Since our population is not large if you get into some of the organizations you meet the same people.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:17 pm

I prefer Kholher, but they are somewhat more expensive and harder to find.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:17 pm

Generiac is the only maker that will guarantee an off grid unit.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:18 pm

Kholher has made medium to huge generators for business and industry.

For many years. Generac is much better than they were 20 years ago when my experience with them was less than steller. Now, with what I am hearing they are much better.

And look at what they are saying. If it is just general 'I do not like them' there is more to the story. Often having to do with personality conflicts, not the equipment itself.

Short and sweet tonight...Good evening everyone

twp @twp Wed Sep 20 8:22 pm

Thank you David, I'm out.

K7KKX - Jerry D Young @K7KKX Wed Sep 20 8:23 pm

I am recovering from some minor problems the last few days so I am calling it a night. Hope to talk next week. Stay safe everyone.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:23 pm

Jamie, did your deer show up today?

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 8:25 pm

Not the beautiful buck. Just a couple mamas and their babies. I'm going to feel bad when I put up the fence to keep them out

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:26 pm

You will have to look at their mournful faces as they gaze hungerly at your fruit trees and lawn.

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 8:27 pm

So mean!!!

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:27 pm

Yes you will be.

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 8:29 pm

Rude.

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:31 pm

Well, on that note I need to go deny someone's voucher before calling it night. Good night, sleep tight do not let the bed bugs bite.

JC @JC Wed Sep 20 8:31 pm

Sleep well!

Idaho70 @Idaho70 Wed Sep 20 8:32 pm

You also.
