Good article on how to store common batteries (cells). Note that all batteries will discharge with time and will lose capacity with time. Common batteries just are not designed to last as a commercial product. Some will last for fairly long times, if not used and properly stored. Read more in the article.

They are expensive and usually only available in very large sizes, suitable for running large appliances and households.
