I did not have much to add during the discussion. My current bug out vehicle is marginal at the moment. It was a good one for a long time but I am having mechanical problems right now. They are getting repaired as money comes in, and once the vehicle is reliable again, I will have an excellent bug-out vehicle for my use.

It is a mid-size 1999 GMC Sonoma High Rider three door four wheel drive pickup truck with V-6 Vortec gasoline engine. While I would prefer a non-electronic diesel engine and mechanically controlled four wheel drive system for EMP protection and the ability to use biodiesel, I am satisfied that the gasoline engine will do what I need to do except for an EMP event and a long term PAW situation where gasoline could be very difficult to obtain.

But for my definition of a basic BOV the Sonoma fits just fine.

Some additional thoughts on BOVs:

Bug Out Transportation choices run the gamut from Shank’s Mare to the Space Shuttle. If nothing specific is set up beforehand, or it is not available, then anything that is available is the best choice. But, like most things, prior planning and good choices will make things easier and more efficient.

Here is a list of some possibilities. It includes Shanks' Mare. It doesn’t include the Shuttle. Pretty much everything else I could think of on the spur of the moment. I’m sure there are others that can be added to the list. Some are general purpose, some are for specific purposes only. Which one you choose will depend on your circumstances. It may be your only vehicle. It might be your spare or special use vehicle such as a work truck or motorhome. It could be a specially set up vehicle just to use to evacuate.

Whichever it might be, there are several things that you should consider about the vehicle before deciding to depend on it. They include reliability, mobility, utility, range, speed, and capacity. If it isn’t going to work you’re better off without it. If it can’t go where you need to go, you don’t need it. If it can’t do what you need, you don’t need it. If it can’t go far enough…you can start using your alternates choices. If it can’t get you away as fast as you need to get away, choose something else. If it can’t carry what you need, you better start thinking of options.

With that said, and getting the “anything is better than nothing” concept as an accepted fact, we get to some particulars. There are no guarantees. But you need a plan. If your goal is to get to the shelter at the school, hopping in the old jalopy might be more than adequate. And you’ve always got your two feet, if you have two feet. But many people are going to want to go either someplace specific, or get away from someplace specific. Decide what your plan will be for different evacuation scenarios and plan accordingly.

Set up something that is as reliable as you can make it, that will travel the terrain that you need to travel, with enough of any required fuel to get you where you’re going or far enough away from where you’re leaving, fast enough to keep you safe, with everyone and everything you really, really need to take with you, as easy to control as possible, and as useful in other ways as possible.

Bug Out Transport Options:

Shanks’ Mare with backpack
The above with snowshoes, cross-country skis, and flotation vest
Both the above with handcart/garden cart/wheeled deer drag/pulka
Kayak/Canoe/Folding boat/Inflatable boat/solo fishing float
Horse/any other large transport animal
Horse cart/wagon
Dog cart/sled
Bicycle/MotoPed
Motorcycle/Dirt bike/ROKON Bike

Specialty vehicle (DUKW, Cadillac-Gage V-150, Hagglund BV-206, swamp buggy/mud racer)
Custom vehicle/Heavily customized vehicle
Various trailers for use with the various vehicles

A BOV only, not something intended for use in the PAW, can be pretty simple. It only needs the range and ability to get you where you need to go and have enough carrying capacity to take along the people and supplies that need to go with you.

It can be old and beat up. It can be ugly as sin. Doesn't need AC, though a heater/defroster is good. Does need decent tires, good brakes, and working lights. Any old car that can make that one trip to get you to safety can be a BOV. Doesn't need fancy electronics, either entertainment or power train. It just needs to be ready to go when you turn the key. It can sit up on blocks, taken down once a year to blow out the cobwebs and retreat the fuel. When it is needed, push it off the blocks, get in, and go. Doesn't matter if it doesn't go one foot further than the driveway of your destination. It got you to safety and that is all that matters. Sure, it can be much more, but it doesn't have to be.

A PAW vehicle is another thing entirely. PAWV - Post Apocalyptic World Vehicle. This is what I eventually want to have. It will work as a BOV, as well as be capable of use in a PAW situation.

This is the way I would want to set up Rufus, my version of a BOV/PAWV I want to build.

This is not a basic BOV. It is for the PAW and whatever it might bring.
I think as long as the vehicle is overland capable, with good range and load capacity, and decent speed it would do as a BOV. Better if a major maker and parts are available.

But if you want something well equipped to not only survive, but prosper in the PAW, what it carries is as important as the vehicle itself. This is a pick and choose possibilities and options list. Not everyone would want or need everything. Some items are somewhat redundant, but might spark some ideas. It is set up to be used in the PAW for scouting, exploration, salvage, recovery, and escort, with defensive measures incorporated.

I have dreams about your BOV there Jerry. It would be awesome to build up a project like that. Maybe someday...

It was mentioned during the net about flat towing a subaru. I'm not sure that it's ok to do this, and I do know that it is very different depending on make and model of vehicle. Typically, if the axles can't be disconnected in some fashion then the transmission or transfer case is still spinning even if it's in neutral and this could lead to failure rather quickly. If you ever need to do it make sure you know the best way and do it safely.

My BOV is a Toyota 4runner. I've rebuilt every part of it at this point. Long block 22re engine, swapped in an older version of a 5 speed and gear driven transfer case with low gears, rebuilt the axles and added a rear locking differential, armor every where, winch, lights, ham radio, etc. It works for me, as my bug out route over the Sierra's is a little rough in spots.
