The Bankster Chronicles by Dave Jewett.
Edge of Darkness is the first book and Darkness Decends is the second.
The story is a historical fiction with history of the banking system and side stories to explain how our current system works. The fiction side is set with a couple who decides to mint their own gold and silver coins, until the fed decides to make an example of them.
This is a very well written series that I definitely recommend.
