Fruitcakes - No, not the elected kind
« on: February 11, 2018, 07:45:18 AM »
Most of us are familiar with the running jokes about "what do you do with a fruitcake"...

Leave it on the neighbors porch, next to the sack of Zucchini.
Make bookends for all of your shelves.
Mail it back to the person who gave it to you last year.
...

It turns out that they may be edible.  I know, shock and possible horror.

From the prepper standpoint, think about the long term storage life, seriously.

They are also reasonably high calorie and, if made with nuts (not by nuts) offer a more balanced nutrition profile.

Put the humor (I couldn't resist) aside and read this article:

https://survivalblog.com/fruit-cake-crazy-nmsourdough/#more-53999

The article contains some actual serious recommendation for fruitcake, so do read it.  :)

It also ends with more tongue-in-cheek recommendations... ;D

What do you know? Someone else is advocating fruitcake as a prepper regular food and storage food. It is also an excellent addition to field rations, and emergency rations.

I have been using quality fruitcakes since the early 80s for this, and advocating fruitcake since then as a good food product for prepping. Here is the one I get: Harvey's Groves' Grandmas' Old Fashioned Fruitcake
https://www.harveysgroves.com/fruit-Grandmas-Old-Fashioned-Fruit-Cake-30.cfm#

It is 85% fruits and nuts to 15% batter. Good blend of the alcohols for  preservation. Well packed in and placed in good round tins.

I highly recommend a person add the good ones to their stocks.

Just my opinion.
