Article - Cooking From Scratch Is It A Thing Of The Past?
« on: December 01, 2017, 05:51:19 PM »
Hey, can you cook?  Really cook from raw ingredients?  If not, then you better know someone who does...

What do you need in the way of basic food stuffs?  I'm not talking about cans and buckets full of prepper stock.

Read this great article about the basic set of "scratch" cooking foods and a few simple recipes to start your learning curve.

https://www.foodstoragemoms.com/2017/11/cooking-from-scratch-thing-past/

If your world crashes around you and you still don't know how to cook, I plan on having a basic restaurant which will accept barter goods and/or gold and silver.  No big menu, but certainly better than freeze dried soups and casseroles.  If you have some game, we'll be happy to prepare it for your meal, for a cut of the meat.

Learn cooking now, or be forced to eat whatever I fix for the day...

Definite a prerequisite surviving a long term SHTF event, IMO. Hunting, foraging gardening all going to require cooking from scratch and preparing the raw ingredients.

Based on the initial question in the OP:

No, it is not.

Many people still cook from scratch. Just today I picked up some leeks and turnips to make... wait for it... leek and turnip soup. From scratch.

Even though many people do take advantage of many of the convenient easy-fix meals, some of which I must admit are much better than my scratch cooking, and even one of my brothers who is a truly masterful cook, uses some mixes, that quite of few of them can and still do cook from scratch when time and circumstances allow for it. When it becomes time for them to do it full time for lack of other options, I think most will fall right back into it. Though there will be some (hopefully under the breath for the sake of the kids) cursing going on.

And then you have those that cannot even boil water. Who will suffer greatly and then learn, find someone that can, or die.

Just my opinion.

Yes, that the plan,  Prepper food stocks are to get you to the point where you can begin to harvest (and cook) local foods.

After that point, you will either have learned to cook or know someone who does.

I'll be nice and acknowledge that some people in a group will be involved in other aspects of living, such a gardening, shelter building, guarding your homestead, etc.  But every cook needs some down time when someone else takes over for while.  It is a skill which most (all) of group should share.

Jerry,
I hope my cooking is good enough not to kill someone... But if they manage to do it themselves...

Plus, where do you buy your leeks?

I have found them in several stores, though not consistently. Nor is quality very consistent.

I was going to make a pot of the soup early last week when I realized it would be Thanksgiving, but the Wal-Mart on Kitzkie had some nice ones. The ones I got there yesterday are fine, but not as good as the ones the week before.

Just my opinion.

Jerry, I wonder if leeks could be grown in a windowsill?

I think they can. But remember, they are an onion and they do smell like it.

Just my opinion.

Personally, I don't mind the smell of growing onions or garlic.  I suppose some might not like it... Don't come to my house then.  Right now my eyes are watering because I chopped up four onions for the freezer.  This too shall pass.

Quick Fact: You can Grow Leeks From your Leftover Leeks!
When you use leeks (or green onions), instead of throwing out the bottom, stick it in water on a windowsill and it will grow! It will grow up from the middle first and then, once you notice the roots growing bigger, you can move it to your garden (or if it is too cold out, an indoor pot), and harvest from your leek whenever you need some!
