Article - What Happens When You Eat Nothing but MREs

VERY GOOD ARTICLE on the consequences of relying TOO MUCH on MRE's...

http://www.askaprepper.com/happens-eat-nothing-mres/

I've spend a few months on "mostly' MRE diets, while dredging for gold in California.   One Word: Constipation...

Read the article and adjust your prepping diet plans to include OTHER food sources.

One thing that stood out to me was the logistical support "normally" have.  Hot meals etc  flown/trucked in or else supplies brought in to support a field kitchen.

I have eaten, in the field, C--Rations, LRRP (freeze dried) rations, and MREs.

If you had a way to heat water -  the LRRPs were good chow.
If you have and can use the MRE heaters - they turn cold food fairly warm.   Makes the meal better.
When you've been humping it in the jungle all day - you get hungry enough to eat C's.
I was eating one when one of the guys said, "Hey Doc, the box your C's came in is dated 1954"
It was 1971.  MMMMMMMMMMMMMM good

Most folks are happy being a part of the Great Shepherds Flock.
Some folks choose to be wolves and prey on the flock.
Some folks choose to defend the flock and confront the wolf.

I believe those Cs qualified as "aged and ripe".

I'll stock MREs as a reserve food, but I'd hate to be stuck with ONLY those... :P

Freeze drying at least preserves some of the enzymes and vitamins which are cooked out of MRE's.

Maybe they should issue packets of Polyethylene Glycol 3350 (MiraLAX) with the rations.

In 1986, while in the TxARNG I had a MRE that hat three cooked freeze dried pork patty.  A bit later she the squad I was in had lagered in for the night, I quietly passed gas.  My partner gagged and masked up. When it was all over, one of the guys asked if I had cancer. That particular meal made me into a weapon of gas destruction.  From then on, the squad made sure that I DID NOT have that meal.

In general, I like them, but that one specifically did not like me.

In 1981 I had some C's while on an outing, it was still good especially with Tabasco.
(When I was young I was told to always bring Tabasco with)

Have not had an MRE.

My MREs also had a Tabasco bottle in most boxes.  NOT on my list of edible spices...

Comparing MREs to Cs, I would, in my limited experience of C rations, give the award to MREs.   More and better flavor is the only criteria.

On a side note, if we ever get out of one or more of the middle east conflicts, I expect to see a flush (pun intended) of MREs hitting the market at lower prices.   This happened after Desert Storm (Iraq) concluded, I expect to see it again.

Since I do consider MREs to be a viable item in long term food stocks, I'll keep my eyes on our local and online outlets for Mil. Surplus cases.  They may NOT be what I want to eat, but they are, technically, food which stores well.

I considered MREs as special purpose rations for Bugging Out, patrolling, or other situations where a cooking fire would be problematic.
