Tilapia seems to be the best fish for Aquaphonics, but they are illegal both in Nevada and in most parts of California. In fact, if you have live Tilapia in California, the fine is currently $10,000 per fish.

I've seen a few semi-successful systems with catfish, but they provide their own sets of problems. The nice thing about catfish is that they can eat duckweed. The bad thing is that they grow slowly and they can be sensitive to shifting levels of pH and nitrites in the system.

Has anyone locally had success with a fast growing scaled fish that can serve as a source of meat supply as well as nutrients for the plants?

Any feedback or ideas are welcome.

Thanks!

I do not really like tilapia for eating and it can be killed easily if water temperature drops.

I would rather go with small mouth bass and/or perch. I much prefer the taste and the small mouth bass can take much colder water.

Just my opinion.

A good friend of mine is currently running a set up with large mouth bass and sturgeon with good success. If there's any questions you have, I would be happy to ask him for you.
