Early planting crops
« on: April 03, 2017, 08:50:36 AM »
This article gives six crops which can be planted earlier in the spring and give you food before other crops.

Remember that after a bad year (crop failure for whatever reason), you will want to have food as soon as possible in the next year.  You will be tired of living off your stored reserves (assuming you even have any reserves...).

My personal recommendation is to plant in stages, say one row per week, so that you do not use all of your seed in one desperate attempt to start a garden.  If you have a harsh or late spring, you will not lose all your seed...

NOTE these are not the only crops which can survive an early planting.  Do some research on recommended planting dates for other garden crops.  DO know the expected season starts for your local area.  This can vary widely even in the same latitude (micro climates).  Ask neighbors, who have gardens, about what dates are working for them and for what crops.

An additional recommendation is to start some (not all) seeds indoors or in cold frames.  This will give some protection in case of an unexpected storm or freeze.
