Tips on Evacuating with Pets and Livestock

Some very good ideas here about how to PLAN on taking your pets and livestock with you in an evacuation situation.

DO look at the pictures for more ideas on how to reduce the stress on your animal friends during an evacuation.

Some animals will know that you intend to help them and will cooperate.  Others will panic and require careful handling and calm words and slow actions to avoid injury to both them and you.

Larger livestock will benefit from practice runs intended to get them used to the evacuation procedure.

For pets, it is a good idea to also take something that they are most comfortable being around, such as sleeping pads, favorite toys and blankets.  If you own a transport cage, use it as the animals primary "living" space.  This will make it a "safe" space (no pun intended) and they will welcome being placed in the cage during emergencies.

Animals will be scared, just as will children, in an evacuation.  Use calm speech and touch as much as possible to let them know that you are helping and that they are being cared for.
