"Farm in a Box" brought to you from California
« on: February 27, 2017, 05:54:36 AM »
Advisory:  This is a concept for those who already have the "farmer" skill set.

I post this to give you some ideas for your own farm or homestead, not as a recommendation for this product.

http://www.farmfromabox.com/

The website is short on actual information about the content of the "Farm in a Box".

The Price is also not specified, so expect it to be steeper than you expect.

I have several comments, not all of which are supportive (alright, none of them are supportive):

1)  This is designed and, I assume, assembled by people who have been raised in the political and social environment of California.  So you must wade through the language barrier (eco-speak) and look for the ideas behind the product.

2)  As I mention at the start, you MUST already have the skill set needed to BE a farmer.  That is NOT included in the kit...

3)  There is heavy reliance on technology (Plastics, Solar Panels, Electric pumps, Computers).  In a TEOTWAWKI situation, these will either no longer be available or will have a limited lifetime (think plastic greenhouse covers).

My recommendation is to look closely at the limited information on their website and build your own "kit".  Plan on manual labor for all of the necessary functions of your farm.   That means manual or water powered pumping, horse or mule powered plowing and hand tools for cultivating.

It is completely possible to farm 2 acres by manual labor,  I have done this personally.  Yes, power tools (tractor, pumps, etc.) make it easier.  Don't plan on having those tools.

The one, single advantage offered by "Farm in a Box" is that the tools are all in one container, ready to move to your BOL or homestead.  I think you could make your own "box" using off-the-shelf items, but again, you must already know what is needed and have the skills to use them...

I assume, but cannot confirm from their website, that there is a very large "instruction manual" included as part of the package... A "Farming for Dummies" book, if you will.  I would hope that it is offered in hard-copy form, and not simply included as a computer database.  Insert the image of someone reading a handheld tablet while riding a tractor...  "Turn tractor around at the end of each row"...  "Do not run over chickens". etc.

And no, I don't have much respect for the products of the California education system, YMMV.

150 people fed from 2 acres? Unlikely even with 2 full growing seasons unless you are importing your staples this sound way off.

You must remember that these people were raised on the California Diet.  A light salad (no dressing, croutons must be vegan) is a meal... ::)

As I said in my original post, that website is very light on details, such as an actual analysis of what was to be grown and how many calorie-meals are to be expected.

Take the concept and design your own cargo container content list.

1)  Seeds - enough for at least TWO seasons, in case your first crops fail.

2)  Gardening Tools - enough for a crew of two, minimum.   That includes a plow and harness.

3)  Hand Well drilling method(s) AND tools - you must know how deep your water resource is on your BOL or homestead.  Hand drilling more than 50 feet will be difficult...

4)  Wind mill water pump - including tower and assembly tools.

5)  Complete document set for everything - you might not need it, but your children might...

6)  Food stock for One Full Year, for your whole crew - you're preppers right?

7)  Water storage tank(s) - plus rain collection system.  Plan on all water needs, not just the garden irrigation...

Ok, that is MINIMAL content.  Is there any room left that 30-40 foot container?  Then fill it with NON-essentials, like small solar panels and a radio transceiver etc.

I note that this does NOT include a shelter (home), kitchen tools, maintenance tools bedding and everything else you might need to live...

This concept is ALSO NOT viable in a bug-out situation.  Moving this container to your site will require transportation equipment (truck and trailer), fuel and time.  Best is to have this container already on your BOL/homestead, ready and waiting for you to arrive with everything else you will need.

Conceptually a very good idea. Like y'all, I have reservations about their execution of the idea. Below, while not really the same thing, is something similar enough to perhaps get someone to think about how they would go about making their own version of a farm in a box. The concept of the post from which the ideas and lists below were taken was what would one want/need to live out their life in the wilderness. Just my thoughts and ideas on the subject. Let me know what you think, additions, changes, deletions, etc.

Lifetime alone in the Wilderness (30 years)

A few recent scenario posts have prompted me to follow up on a couple of them. So here is my latest list to address the questions in those posts.

Situation:
You are fed up with life in the city. You’ve lost your family and friends to an on-going plague. With the plague taking so many, people are isolating themselves in small clans. You decide you would rather live by yourself in the wilderness.

Givens:
You are 45ish, and your family history is such that you can expect to live 30 more years, in good health.

You can live in any wilderness area of the US without fear of outside human contact.

With the steady die-off of humans, natural flora and fauna in the chosen area are making a big comeback and the weather stays in the area’s normal limits. Only things suitable for the Growing Zone of the selected area can be grown.

You can pick your vehicle of choice for the single one way trip, worth up to $60,000.

You can have one trailer that can be realistically towed with the vehicle worth up to $30,000

You can have the guns you want for the situation.

You have $300,000 from the sale of your house, and a self-imposed timetable of 6 months, to get the rest of the things you want. Custom items can be made, and standard items are in stock and available for regular prices.

Where do you go, how do you get there, what do you take with you, and what do you do when you get there? Take your time and include as many details as possible.

Or, what do I need to add, delete, or change, if you don’t want to do a list of your own?

My list:

Location is on a natural lake (Mark Twain Lake, Missouri) well above the high water mark, growing zone 5, with mixed deciduous and evergreen forest, and a mixture of large and small game, fish, game birds, and migratory waterfowl. Move in early spring at the best time to transplant trees and begin preparing a garden.

Area is cleared of trees and prepared for buildings, a fruit & nut orchard, a Yellowhorn tree orchard for biodiesel oil, a temporary oil seed field, and a large garden, using truck, chainsaw, ROKON, and building tools

Fruit and nut tree seedlings are planted in orchard area. Yellowhorn trees are planted in the oil seed orchard.

Trailer box is rolled off trailer using truck winch, set on site cut timbers, and the double inner slides extended to create a 22’ x 24’ insulated building with greenhouse side facing south. Front porch & roof is erected and secured. Folding greenhouse is erected and secured. Potted miniature trees are placed in greenhouse. Building is tied down to ground anchors.

Truck box is lifted off truck bed using gantry crane, set on site cut timbers next to the first building, and the double inner slides of main compartment extended to create a 22’ x 12’ insulated building with projecting 8’ x 6’ sleeping loft. Building is tied down to ground anchors. A door opening on each of the two extendable box buildings match to give access from one to the other, with another door for outside exit/entry.

Star Plate components are removed from trailer and 3 12’ diameter insulated buildings (1 chicken coop & 2 storage), and 2 12’ diameter greenhouses erected. Buildings are tied down to ground anchors.

Dock lumber and pontoons are moved to lake shore. Dock is built on pontoons and pushed onto water with truck. Floating dock is secured with site cut poles driven into the lake bottom. Kayak and Jon boat are secured to dock.

Wood stoves for the buildings are installed and storage cases moved inside.

10 solar panels are installed on building roofs and 6 batteries installed with inverter. Other 6 batteries stored dry for replacement in 15 years. Ditto second set of 10 solar panels. Power is connected to pre-wired buildings (Outlets and LED light fixtures). Entire system is grounded.

Initial supply of fire wood is gathered and cut using ROKON, generator, & chainsaw.

Kitchen and bath gear is set up in the pre-plumbed/wired building with sleeping loft.  Well is installed by kitchen/bath/sleeping building and plumbed in to hand pump, with drain to garden plot.

Garden plot and oil seed field are worked with rototiller, incorporating as much humus material as can be reasonably gathered and distributed from the surrounding area with garden cart and tools.

Seedling potatoes are planted. Strawberries, blackberries, rose bushes, mint, and tomatoes are planted.

Built-in legs for truck bed are lowered and bed detached from frame at a convenient spot to use as tool shed, work platform for biodiesel plant, and garage for ROKON, rototiller, generator, and outdoor tools. Enclosure panels are secured to truck bed and rack.

Trailer is positioned to allow use as 8’ x 30’ storage room and put up on jack stands and tied down to ground anchors. Empty packing cases are stored in trailer and the rest of the space is covered firewood storage.

Truck is set on jack stands, and tied to ground anchors in a position to catch sunlight in the windshield and to allow the use of the front mounted winch, onboard welder, onboard AC inverter, and onboard air compressor using biodiesel when regular diesel is gone.

Front Captain’s chair seats and rear seat are moved to the largest building for seating.

Empty cab is set up for use as drying chamber with drying racks and shelves.

Garden is planted. Field for oil seed plants is planted.

Projects as time passes in order of completion: irrigation water sluice from solar pump in lake to garden, large log lined earth sheltered root cellar/storm cellar/wine cellar, compost piles, human waste burial pits to empty chemical toilets, ice house, lay down log floors in Star Plate buildings, continue to cut firewood to build up a supply for the later years of life when the work would be more difficult.

The compound consists of 12’ x 22’ mini-house w/6’ x 8’ sleeping extension connected to 22’ x 24’ main building with porch and attached greenhouse, 8’ x 32’ storage building, 12’ diameter chicken coop, 2 12’ diameter storage rooms, 2 12’-diameter greenhouses, 8’ x 12’ garage/work room/storage building, all arranged to create a protected area for an outdoor kitchen and summertime activity area.

Supplies & Equipment in custom cases as necessary, carried in the 8’ x 12’ truck box, 8’ x 24’ trailer box & 8’ x 8’ rear deck area of trailer
  (20,000 pounds in 7’x7’x22’ + 7’x7’x11’ + 7’x8’x8’ + 4’x6’x8’ = 2,257 cuft packing space)

Excellent and well thought out but the money would stop me right there.

I am going to post a polar opposite on low budget, low tech bugout subsistence gardening.

Jerry, WOW.

I don't think all of that will fit in a single container unit... ;D

Your list is really the things which will need to be gathered, after "event".  Some will be part of preps but I could not accumulate all of that in any time frame less than "years".

A group might be better able to gather these items, and the property on which to use them.
