One-pan cooking is very advantageous whether over an open fire or woodstove in a Dutch oven or a heavy cast-iron Kettle or frying pan with a good lid.  You can cook it and keep it warming over some hot coals. This is not only a way to preserve it between meals (without refrigeration) but have something hot for your work or security teams when they come in out of the cold. Although you could certainly cook these meals in a modern oven on your own home kitchen range, they are idea for those off-grid or under TEOTWAWKI conditions. Our pioneer ancestors had many arts that we should be learning and this is one.

I read a Western one time where Cookie always kept a good sized pot of beans going along with a fresh every breakfast matching pan of cornbread.

One of the hands who worked for the ranch was sort of like Mongo from Blazing Saddles.  When he showed up a the cook shack he ate what was there.  Cookie was able to keep the meals he fixed for the other hands because of the beans and cornbread he kept for that hand.

WolfBrother

Most folks are happy being a part of the Great Shepherds Flock.
Some folks choose to be wolves and prey on the flock.
Some folks choose to defend the flock and confront the wolf.

I am a SheepDog.
