Bug Out Drill - Overnight Event in Dog Valley
« on: March 31, 2015, 05:48:28 PM »
We will have an overnight training exercise using only our bugout bags. We will stay in Dog Valley spending the night in the woods from Saturday Afternoon until early Sunday Morning for a simulated bugout event. We will hike into the campsite. This gives you an opportunity to test your bags, gear and bugout plans in a group event. This will help provide you a group of trained people to work with and give you a bit of a safety cushion should your plans not quite work out. This will be a moderately physical event although anyone who is generally good health and mobile can accomplish this training.

On Saturday, April 11th at 12:00 sharp we will meet at the Verdi Post Office. From there we will travel by car to Dog Valley. Portable FRS/GMRS radios are highly encouraged so convoy procedures can be communicated while traveling. This will be a rough road so 4x4’s are recommended although a regular 2WD truck/SUV could make the trip if they drive carefully. We will park off the road in a clearing in the tree line near the site. From there, we will take our bags and gear and travel a level road for .9 miles on foot to the overnight site. This in non-developed location in the tree line. The ground at the site is not level and it is a bit rocky in areas. There are no bathrooms or running water. There is a slow moving stream in the meadow nearby that water can be collected from but will absolutely require purifying before it can be used. There is a fire pit in the site. I could not get a cell phone signal at the site but sporadically up higher on the road above the meadow I could get a single bar at times depending on which way the wind was blowing. Don’t plan on having coverage.

We will stage a vehicle at the site for HAM radio communications and we will have medical gear and a means to evacuate a person in case of a medical emergency. We will stage some emergency water and fire extinguishers. What you carry though will be what you have to use for your own survival and comfort. We will not have any electricity, outhouses, toilet paper, light, firewood, heat or food provided; only a sympathetic smile, experienced advice and words of encouragement.

It is highly encouraged that our experienced Preppers use this event to practice their emergency evacuation procedures. You can also practice your family bugout procedures before arriving at Verdi. Again though, we will leave the Verdi Post Office at 12:00 so anyone who is late will on their own to find us as best they can. Plan on being there at least a half hour early. For the HAM radio operators we will be using the SNARS linked repeater system accessing the Peavine repeater.

We'll try to make it but it will depend on how much spring prep work we get done around the homestead. Do you have a GPS coordinate for the site if anyone is late to the rendezvous point?

I was curious on how this will differ from a traditional hike out to a camp site.  Are we going to pretend that we are planning on being here for several days and that once we reach the site we cannot get back to our cars?

This sounds really fun and educational. As we get closer to the date of the event I'll be able to confirm whether or not we'll be able to attend.

We (2) are interested in going, however on bicycles w / trailer we cannot make the trip, even just to Verdi.

Is it possible that we could get a ride from someone?

We are in south Reno, near the Peppermill Casino and, on bikes,  we could meet someone within about 4 miles of there.

We would like to bring both bikes and a trailer, but that may not fit in another vehicle.  It would take a pickup bed to hold all of it.

If we do not use the bikes and limit our gear to just backpacks, we can probably meet someone within a mile of us.

We are flexible on how to do this, if someone is willing to offer the ride.
Thanks

Really wish I could make this. Hopefully next year.
I have to do a St. Bernard Rescue fundraiser as we are really low on cash for the dogs.
I'll have another year to get my bag together, find my really cool hiking tent I lost somewhere and then I'll be ready!
I hope all of you have a great time and learn a lot about your preps.
I'm looking forward to all who go to post here with your results and all you learned.

I don't have GPS coordinates for this area. Hopefully you can meet us at the rendezvous point and we'll lead you in.

I want to thank everyone for coming out for this event. It was a lot of fun, some good exercise and amazing people to spend the weekend with. The midnight gunfire did add an element of realism I hadn't counted on. I'll have to make sure to account for that possibility next time. All in all, it was a successful event due to the enthusiastic participation of my fellow preppers and a great time for me. Thank you for spending your weekend training us. I always learn so much doing these events.

It was a great event. Learned several things about my gear and about myself. The people were great. It was nice to meet (well, I will not use names for opsec reasons) a prepper's wife and daughter. That little girl was a real delight. And got to spend some time with another of the newer members of the group and found him to be an excellent addition to the group.

I was proud as punch for another prepper that problems similar to mine that came through with shining colors. Put me to shame.

The new game cart worked even better than expected. At least, once my compatriots adjusted the weight distribution for me.

Also did an experiment with my water bottle cup stove. I have been using the new military style gel fuel with it, and a single packet was just barely getting the water to a tiny bubble state, but not quite boiling in cold, windy, higher altitude situations. Since the stove is set up to take a variety of fuel, I took along a few small sticks of tinder size wood. I only needed one piece of it, and had some left over, after splitting it down smaller, and feeding it into the stove with the burning gel fuel. Worked like a charm. Got the 12 ounces of water to boiling in a reasonable time, using only part of that piece of tinder.

I also learned that I do not need to worry about others having what they need for these trips. I took quite a bit of extra gear, just in case someone had not planned for something. It has not been needed on any of the trips. I will stop hauling around specialty gear for others and lighten my load a bit. It was kind of presumptuous of me to think I needed to, anyway. Sorry about that.

Also realized, the hard way, that planning and packing while tired and not feeling well leads to major mistakes. Case in point. Since I do not keep the game cart loaded as there is not enough room in the apartment for it, I load it up for each event. Well, my preliminary planning was to take a single 4-liter water bag in addition to my standard water bottles, since there was wild water available along most of the route and near the site. Being tired and not feeling well when I packed the night before the trip, instead of the 4-liter bag at about 8 pounds I packed two 10-liter water bags instead. About 40 pounds. So the game cart was carrying 32 pounds I did not need. Add the other 15-pounds or so of extra, unneeded gear for others, and I could have shaved almost 50 pounds off the total load. Learning experience!

And I want to thank everyone that lent a hand when I needed one. And that was everyone, and quite often. Especially my buddy for the ride and help, and the Leader for keeping an eye on my health during the event.

And a couple of others that I think know who they are, for also keeping an eye on me.

All in all, an amazing experience. I highly recommend that members take advantage of these events when possible. I come away from every one of them feeling like I have improved my prepping capabilities, and learn something important every time.

Just my opinion.

We enjoyed this, our first, outing with the group.  My overall feeling is that this was well worth the time / effort that went into planning it (Thanks Ken oops Rob).

For us, it was very close to the "urgent" bug-out situation as we receive an offer for a ride to the site with only a days notice ("Prepared? What does that mean?").  We spent the very early morning hours 12M - 2am packing our gear and then got a few hours rest before loading bikes and trailer.

For us, the single biggest "fail" was the amount of warm blankets/sleeping bags we had available.

My advice:

Do have some hand warmer packs to stuff into your socks at night, we have them, but did not pack them.

Do have a ground pad for sleeping (we did and it made a huge difference).

Do have at least a wind break around your sleeping area, the chill factor made it much colder than expected...

A tent, while not strictly necessary, is certainly a good idea, if only for the pocket of still air that it creates around you while sleeping.

For cooking, we brought "Sterno" cans...  These work only in still air.  Did I mention the wind?  We were able to warm a quart of water from one can.  Not boiling, just warm.  A smaller pot would have worked better as a good part of the heat went into heating the metal pot and not the water inside.  We resorted to the group campfire to get an actual hot meal.

Finally, I was and am impressed by the rapid camaraderie in a group of people  with both new and old members.  We had met only half of the campers before this outing, so we made some new friends and look forward to the next "live fire training exercise".  Therein lies a tale for the group meeting...

First of all, a big thanks to Rob for organizing the event and being our leader!
I had a great time with a great bunch of people.
I felt this was weekend trip/event really helped me sort out what a bug out could and should be.

I would love to do a two night with 5 to 7 mile Bug Out Drill/event.
Also, would be nice to go over a defencive plan for the bug out camp due to midnight cooter hunting scenarios.  :o
One thing I need to do is get more organized to be able to pack up (the backpack) and move on quicker.

Thanks again everyone for making this a very informative weekend!

    Wow - GREAT event!

David was happy he received his "35 Gun Salute" after everyone elected him "Dictator for life."  This is a joke you won't appreciate unless you were there.  On a serious note, it was very reassuring that everyone responded to the unexpected nighttime shooting with calm deliberation and in the same way.  In the morning we discussed other ways to have dealt with the event and glad we didn't pursue them.   Well, except for Rob's brilliant idea to trigger his car alarm...that I think would have been a great (and appropriate) idea.  It was the first time for me to hear shots that I didn't know FOR SURE were not aimed in my direction and it was disconcerting.  Perhaps it would make some sense to have some discussions on camp security at some point.

Regarding the event itself...it was tremendously helpful.
    • Gear
    - We had what we needed and with a couple of minor items we were more prepared than we thought.  In fact, there are a couple of things we will take out of these kits.
    • Kits
    - The way David packed the bags was, according to him, "all wrong."  He packed based on weight and where things fit, not on when and where you would need them.  He's changing that right now.  I can't see my living room floor.  We will include some sleeping pads (which we use on the cots we take when we go camping)...we made a strange discovery...the ground with only a blanket and sleeping bag is much harder now than it was 30 years ago...don't understand how that happened, but it's a fact!
    • The Test
    - I'm very proud that I was able to prove to myself that I could move my gear by myself.  I thank everyone for their offers for help, but I wanted to do it on my own.  We were last, but we were there.  Here too, we learned that our carts worked, but we will upgrade to much larger wheels...perhaps something like Jerry's game cart.  I also learned that I'm much better pushing than pulling.  Someone also suggested modifying one our collapsible cart with bigger wheels...that's something David is going to check out.  But if necessary, I believe we could move from the car to another place...SLOWLY, BUT SURELY!  One other thing...I have to find ways to keep myself warmer.  Even with warming pads, Long-Johns, pants, etc.; I was still cold in my cold weather sleeping bag.
    • Assistance
    - We did receive and accept offers of assistance.  THANKS!
    • The Group
    - GREAT!  As usual, really enjoyed the group/discussions.  We had fun and learned a lot.  Rob and Jerry are walking encyclopedic resources and both so willing to share...THANKS!
    • Leadership
    - STELLER!  Thanks Rob! Well planned and what a great location
One last point.  David & I would STRONGLY encourage others to participate in future bug out events; especially women.  It's very educational, fosters confidence and it's fun.

Thanks for everything and thanks to everyone!
