OK - MY OPINION - If you work thru this list, in the order it appears, you will obtain a broad range of good medical knowledge, starting with the basics then working up.

However, without training and practice.................
Remember, a BOOK a COOK does not make.
If you have time/money etc - take the Red Cross 1st Aid courses, join a CERT team, GET TRAINING.

I have both (including the 1st edition companion CD). 
The 1st. has stuff the 2nd does not have.
The 2nd. has stuff the 1st does not have.
If you can affort it - my opinion - get both.
 
HOWEVER, the original Special Force's medical guide was completely supplanted by the SOF medical handbook noted above. The following are some quotes about the original SF manual:

"That manual is a relic of sentimental and historical interest only, advocating treatments that, if used by today’s medics, would result in disciplinary measures,” wrote Dr. Warner Anderson, a U.S. Army Colonel (ret.) and former associate dean of the Special Warfare Medical Group. “The manual you reference is of great historical importance in illustrating the advances made in SOF medicine in the past 25 years. But it no more reflects current SOF practice than a 25 year-old Merck Manual reflects current Family Practice. In 2007, it is merely a curiosity.”
“Readers who use some of the tips and remedies could potentially cause harm to themselves or their patients.” 

In order to use this manual, you would have to already know what is still useful vs what isn't.  I have a copy, it's a fascinating read, especially the parts that are in there that "would result in disciplinary measures".

In all honesty, to me, it's not a big deal to do.  I am a former .mil medic, a life member in SOMA, and feel that I should take the time to share what I know.

The list started years ago as a result of a discussion in a now defunct Remote, Austere, and Bush medicine forum.  The members self published the first book in that list.
Survival and Austere Medicine: An introduction

The discussion was "What should we tell the non-medical types, when the ask about what they should know".  The strongest critics of my list have been those who can't grasp that the muggles need a simple place to start with.  My list ( along with the take the Red Cross 1st aid training) is what I see to be a logical progression for a non-medical type to start with.

One of the original authors (Goatlady) has since passed and Swedeglocker has long since moved on to other pastures but we have new blood working on it, and it promises to be a much-expanded edition worthy of your consideration.

Keith (Resqdoc) seems to have dropped off the face of the earth. Last was seen a few years back over on one of the SOCOM-type forums. I believe he may have undergone some life-altering events that included a building fire on his property and a major job change.

As far as the PAW I've decided to do it in 3 segments, the first one being almost ready for print after some minor tweaking (word here, a comma there, minor change in localities for background info somewhere else). The 2nd one is also written but needs much more tweaking, and there is some of the 3rd segment already written down as well. Looking at around 200 pages per segment. Lot of new material added and some changes to the overall story such that someone who was familiar with it from the beginning (15 years ago!) will find unfamiliar in places.

Right now I am looking for the right venue to put it out there in ebook land. I need all the help I can get.

RR, I have had decent luck putting my books up on Kindle. I did that for several years, and then was picked up by a startup publisher willint to do the print work and add much better covers than the basic two-color ones I was using. When the time comes, if you are interested in going into printed books, as well as epub, I can put you in contact with my guy. Of course, you can also use Amazon Create Space, which seems to be working okay now. Early on it was somewhat problematical.

Time to add a little update for the members here.

In the last edition of SAM the top runners for basic must-have books for the medically uninitiated were the Where There Is No Doctor/Dentist books we are all familiar with.

I am amidst the update to the references section and have elected to change the recommendations for both of those to lower order recommends.

In their place I am recommending newer books. For basic medical care the winner is Wilderness and Survival Medicine 2014: 2nd Edition. The authors are Chris Breen and Craig Ellis, M.D. Rather than a how-to it offers some definitive treatment information, considerations and descriptions of conditions, and a wealth of general info even an experienced medical type might find useful. It is not an end-all sort of book but definitely supersedes WTIND in scope with a non-medical person in mind. Hence the higher recommend.

For dentistry there is Emergency Dental Handbook: Providing Dental Care in Disaster Areas, Combat Zones and Other Austere Environments by Met Clark, EMT-P. Definitely more oriented to modern dental technique and reflective of the basic tools even preppers can access. Only 90 pages yet he manages to toss in very good drug info, 3 different field kit recommendations depending on your mission profile, and how to perform basic dental procedures.

Thought I'd offer something potentially useful to the discussion, not that WB needs help; he's done a fine job of it as it is.
