Plumas county requires a hoop house is limited in size and stupidly requires a snow load to be engineered, which does not exist.

I built a hoop house. 1/2 pvc x 20', the base was 12' x 24'. Beds were 4 1/2' wide with a 3' walkway in the middle. I used 4way pvc joints in yhe middle of the hoops to tie it all together. Built up the end walls with 2x4 and the base with 2x6. I used 1/2" rebar by 18" long to secure the pipe to the base and added plumbers tape around the to make sure it stayed. The front had a door and the back had a window. I used 6 mil 4 year guranteed uv resistant plastic, which only lasted 2 years here with the sun. Lol!

You can build them yourself but you need to make sure it will hold in the wind we have. Sounds like yours worked pretty well Josh.

It was great to have! Even with the wind here in excess of 50mph it held up good. I built it facing north/ south so the sides took the brunt of the wind.

My own experience with hoop houses is 30 years old. We had low (6ft) hoops on about 50 feet of row crop. No staking, just buried the PVC about 6 inches on each side. The plastice was NOT UV resistant and only lasted on season. At the time, plastic sheet (12 x 100 ft) was cheaper than now so we lived with the short life.

I think i spent a little over $500 to build mine initially. Ya i did 1 season with 6mil painters plastic and it blew out after 4 months. The next year i invested about $100 for the uv plastic.

Polination was an issue in mine. Anything that needed bees to polinate didnt produce well for me.

Yes for pollination we will have to bring in bees. I have apple trees on the property now and did not have pollination problem.

I used drip line and rand drippers to each plant. But i watered all winter manually. The house kept moisture in and the ground was amended to hold the water with peet moss.

I never had issues with freezing in mine and it got cold often. I just planted cold hearty crops in the winter like lettuses and kale. Even grew garlic over winter ant they did awesome!
