Title: First Camp of the year moved from Memorial Day
Post by: Shortaxe on May 02, 2016, 09:10:24 PM
I have good news and bad news, which do you want first?

Ok the bad news. Memorial day camp has to be moved (for the last time). This is something that I had not taken into account, traffic and crowds. I am seeing much more traffic now that spring is here and I remember why we don't ever camp on this weekend, crowds, confrontations and noise. Rob and I talked and decided this was the right move and there it is.

Ok the GOOD NEWS. Camp is set and planning has begun. It will be June 18-19 and the same idea, going into the outback.
I have posted a flier for it with some information and your comments and ideas on what you might like to do are welcome.

Again, sorry for the delays but we have this dialed now!

Sweet! I like it! Well done Vic!

Some possibilities to be considered:

Would like to set up a comms watch so we can know when the 'event' is over and can head home. NOAA weather radio, shortwave, public service radio, Aircraft long range AM, Amateur HF, etc.

Camp security and watch standing including binocular usage and sighting reporting. (Non-aggressive, as safety measure from wild animals, of course.)

Setting up a low profile camp and camp camouflage.

Finding water in the desert and field water filtration/purification techniques.

Cat holes, latrines, and field sanitation.

Dakota fire pit.

Safe axe and shovel/entrenching tool use (for camp set up).

Heat stress medical issues.

Vehicle recovery operations and towing.

All I can think of at the moment.

I would also like to see some training on fire starting with bow-drill or fire-stick.

If possible, I would like to make a bow drill, which needs clay and a couple of days to dry before use.

Clay.... To make a bow drill??? This I got to see.  ;D

As of now, I SHOULD be able to go, and I'll be willing to teach a bow drill class and flint and steel class as well.

The clay is used to make a heavy disk on the drill shaft.  It transfers momentum on both stokes.

I've posted some video links about this process.  I want to practice it.

AH, it would help if I read what I typed.  I did not mean BOW drill with the clay mass driver.  It is a pump drill.

We would like to attend on Jun 18-19, but would need transport.  We (two of us) have bicycle trailer, without the bikes, for our gear.

If you have a pickup and have room, please PM me or use the email link on my NNPG profile and let's discuss it.

Thanks
TWP

OK, had to make a final recon of the area for camp, making sure of several things. So attached is the official flyer with information as to where it is.
If you plan on coming, please post on this forum topic so we have a rough head count.
We will have a couple ways of finding the camp, read the brochure, the book cipher will come in the next week as a PDF for your use if you want to participate.
Day trippers are fine, post your attendance as such.
Would like everyone if possible to carry an extra 5 gal of water and shovel for fire prevention, we will on our own there and don't want an issue.
Comments welcome!

We plan on being there (two of us), with the caveat that we need a ride.  Our bicycles will not make that trip in a reasonable time.
Title: Cipher Book and Instructions
Post by: Shortaxe on June 12, 2016, 05:53:09 PM
Alright,
Preps are done for the trip.
Attached is the Cipher Story and instructions on how to use it.
We are planning on a campfire, wind permitting so that will be a field decision, don't plan on it.
Some are coming with just their car kits and some are not.

PLEASE check in and let me know who is coming for the camp and who is for the day.

Thanks
Vic

Without giving away the exact location of the camp, there is reason to suspect we will encounter ticks, so be prepared for them, if you plan on doing any hiking in the area...

If anyone is curious, I'll explain this in camp, but that will be too late to address the need for tick repellent...

Title: Last update before camp, READ THIS
Post by: Shortaxe on June 16, 2016, 09:24:48 PM
Last update before camp.
I am going to be testing the new Go Tennas I have for communcations with cell phones. If you want to participate, download the "Go Tenna" app from Google or ITunes before going to camp and we will include you in the trial. All you need is the app on your phone. It is one word "Gotenna".
Also, signs for Code Cipher will be up around 4pm on friday, not before so keep that in mind and try it out.
I will be bringing my bow and arrows so feel free to bring your favorite flying devices.
Also tarps. We will be doing mock up's of our own shelter ideas so bring your gear!
I did have one bar of AT&T out there so it should be possible to call or text me if needed.

We will be using Simplex, 146.250 for comms during this event.
We will also monitor will also be for 147.210 in case you cannot raise us on Simplex and for general traffic.
That is all.

For those not registered, I have been posting a weather link inside this forum.

http://nnpg.net/NNPG_Forum/index.php?topic=680.0 (http://nnpg.net/NNPG_Forum/index.php?topic=680.0)

Weather for this weekend looks to be cooler (70's-80's) with a chance of showers on saturday.

I think this is just perfect, not too hot and not too dry.

This was an amazing event and a great chance to test out gear and work from our bags. Vic really outdid himself putting this together. I learned to work with maps in a way I haven't before and found it easy to pick up. Vic also demonstrated the GoTenna technology to us and I found it to be a great solution to personal communications. I really thought for this event that I would spend more time with my bags and found once again that I didn't need as much as I thought I would, which always tends to be the case. We had an opportunity to work with one of my favorite events, knot tying because this is such a perishable skill reenforcing the mantra that Practice Promotes Proficiency. Vic was also kind enough to bring out his firearms cleaning gear to go over some of the items he uses and once again, he demonstrated products I hadn't seen before. These events also show how well the group works together to get tasks done quickly and efficiently. I always appreciate the opportunity to spend time with these amazing people and learn from each of them. I look forward to the next event and again, share my profound thanks to Vic for all his hard work and efforts on our behalf.
