Title: Future Camp Events
Post by: Shortaxe on February 10, 2016, 07:25:46 PM
Changing Camp Services.
So my question is to all site members and those who might attend a training camp.
We have established places that we traditionally camp. These have things like firepits, restrooms, water, tables, trash cans and sometimes covered areas. These are very nice to have and we all have found that we needed less to think about when planning and during the camp.
So what if we did not have these?
What if you brought your water, toilet facilities, trash bags, tables and shade?
It would take you more time to be prepare and execute your camp but isn't this what we prep for? Being self reliant for a few days?
The result would be more places to camp at and some could be pretty unique and it would allow us to do more things without the normal sets of rules.
I don't want to have folks throw in the towel on going but to see if we could expand our groups range and have more variety.
Could I get your thoughts on these items:
Would you attend a camp if you have to provide for yourselves with the aforementioned items?
How far would you travel to the camp?
Are you capable of traveling unpaved, semi decent roads?

Thanks to all for participating! 8)

I'm all for training at a completely undeveloped site. This would provide a degree of difficulty that we haven't been able to bring to the event other than our past overnight events in Dog Valley. I think somewhere in remote BLM land would be nice. It would additionally allow us an opportunity to shoot both firearms and archery for those that want to.

Although I understand the difficulty for most members going off road, this would be something I would really enjoy and have the vehicle to do so.
I'm used to camping in undeveloped areas and like Rob, I think this would present an excellent opportunity to test us.

I would also be open to sharing my vehicle with another party if they did not have the off-road capability but still want to join us.
I have a small off road capable utility trailer for hauling a good amount of gear.

I'm all in.

Yes, I (myself only) would like to do this.

How far would you travel to the camp?
I'm on a bicycle, so the limit is about 10 miles per day of travel time.  If I get a ride, the only limit is what the driver will accept.

Are you capable of traveling unpaved, semi decent roads?
On a bike, yes, but travel is slower, so more time is needed.  If I get a ride, again, it is up to the driver.

Edit:  I have spent several summers working a remote mining claim ( an hour truck travel off pavement) with NO facilities.  We had to bring everything in except water.

I'm not sure that, were we to have to bug out, that there would be all of the facilities available anyway.

So sure, we are in.  It will be good training.

As for your other questions:

Look forward to shooting, archery and trying gear not yet tested!

Let's go!

What! People actually go camping where they have these things? :o

I'm in, anytime, anyplace (That is with in 100 miles), any conditions, and any terrain. Survival in all is a good thing one might think.  :)

I also have a vehicle with extra seats, more gas means further than 100 miles  ;). I even think I might be able to strap a bike to it if needed. 8)

I have no problem packing in/packing out or squatting next to a tree and I have everything I need for primitive camping, which has always been my preference anyways..

As far as travel distance:
If it's just a weekend camp trip - 1-2 hour drive.  Anything farther than that I would prefer a 3-day weekend for the extra camp time.  I know of some sweet spots near Austin that would be great for primitive camping and there's hot springs nearby.

I am capable of driving most forest service roads.

Vic, I would like to thank you for all your efforts on organizing the camp outs.  They are always a great time and a wonderful learning experience.  Thank you for all you do!

Dog Valley level dirt roads are ok. Anything more aggressive and I might have to pass.
150 or so miles in the truck. Further if the roads are smooth enough for a car.
Ive never dug a latrine which would be a new experience. I would also now have a legitimate reason to pick up a porta potty.
Bringing our own water would not be a problem

We just got sad and good news.....the sad news is that we can not go on the camp out which we really wanted to do as it would have been a great experience and Vic always does a great job. The good news is that our son just told us he is coming up from CA. to see his dad for Fathers Day.

I hope that in the future Vic plans a similar one.
