Mud or clay, works very well and if you don't have pots and pans, it could work for you too.

I live in sand country and good clay mud is at a premium. Baking in clay is so useful; you don't have to scale or skin your fish nor pluck feathers off your bird. Keeps the flesh moist and tender like pit cooking. Muck won't work nor a wet ash coating but heavily wrapped in leaves comes closest.
