Seed Source List Non-GMO, "organic", "heirloom" seeds
« on: November 15, 2016, 08:48:38 AM »
Good list of sources for non-GMO, heirloom seeds:

http://www.off-grid.info/food-independence/heirloom-seed-suppliers.html

There are 230 sources (websites) listed here, sorted by state.

For non-gardners, the point is to get seeds which will produce food AND more seeds which are viable and remain true cultivars.

Many garden seed packets, found in local garden stores, will NOT produce viable seed.  They have been genetically selected to NOT produce useful seed.  This is NOT GMO (genetically modified organisms) but simply seed from plants which are cross-bred to prevent viable seed production.  You DON"T WANT these seeds in your prepper stocks...

The best way is for you to save your own seeds from cultivars that succeed for you in your own garden. Next find a seed company that grows its own seed (not all do) in climate with a growing season like yours. Watch for micro climates which is quite trick in mountains and coastal areas.
While heirloom really mean that that particular strain was saved by a particular gardener or family, open pollinated is important as it you can save your own seed. You wont find much GMO seeds outside of commercial farm seed suppliers. Organic seeds are always good but not vital, IMO although raising they organically yourself is definitely worth pursuing for yourself.

Become familiar with the vitality longevity of each cultivar as the is no point in buying big quantities parsnip which only is good for 1 year.

Good thing that I don't like parsnips...

Another source is local seed exchanges.  Check with local schools and public libraries for these.
