Turmeric Homegrown
« on: December 13, 2015, 02:43:24 PM »
There are lot of online reports on the health benefits of Turmeric (Contains Curcumin) and it is possible to grow it indoors, even in our climate.

This article gives instructions on growing and suggestions on where to find a starter rhizome.

http://www.attainable-sustainable.net/turmeric/

I will be searching locally for a starter and will report here if I find it.

I'm still searching for a local source of the living rhizome...

The original article does offer sources by mail order.

In addition, I found this site which, among other information, reports that the Curcumin in Turmeric is not readily absorbed by the body and one "fix" for this is to take it with fats (butter, milk, yogurt or other sources of dietary fat).

Update, some online searching shows a source (Seasonal only) for Turmeric rhizomes)

http://www.localharvest.org/custom-gardens-organic-produce-farm-and-working-member-csa-M630

They say December for local harvest and you must contact them (call or email) to get an invitation to the location of their "local harvest store" which is open June through Fall (not clear on when fall ends for them).

Another listing or the same farm is here:

http://buynevada.org/businesses/growers/custom-gardens/

They are in Silver Springs, more or less local.  They would like to have you make an appointment, not just drive-by shopping.  This is partly due to the seasonal nature of their product and partly (I suspect) to keep the traffic down)

Let me know if you do contact them and find Turmeric.
