(upd 11/17/17) Article - Thoughts on Hunting for Survival
« on: December 15, 2017, 06:05:41 AM »
This topic has been discussed before among various members of NNPG, not so much online or in this forum.

Other online sources have frequently stated the obvious truth (right?) that wild game will NOT sustain a large number (even a small number) of people in a PAW (Post Apocalyptic World) situation.

This article give good examples of this (and, IMO, some OPSEC failure too).

The reader comments which follow the article are worth reading too.

I'm adding this article to this thread because it is on topic.

It is a multi-part article and I will update this post as the other part(s) become available:

Acquiring Small Game Quietly
Part 1)  https://survivalblog.com/acquiring-small-game-quietly-part-1-s-d/

Part 2)  https://survivalblog.com/acquiring-small-game-quietly-part-2-s-d/

One point in particular is the comment by the author about the change in game activity from day to night when under hunting pressure.  This could serve you because, in a PAW (Post Apocalyptic World), some of the other hunters may NOT understand this, this leaving game for you to harvest.
I also note the comments about the use of air rifles for small game.  Not only is this wise in terms of ammunition usage, they are much quieter than powder driven weapons and may (might, maybe) be easier to service in the field.  Then there is the lower cost associated with such weapons.  YMMV

Air guns and spring guns suitable for reliably taking small game are not that much cheaper than the less expensive .22 rimfires. Using BB caps and CB caps keep the sound levels way down. I would not trust a cheap air rifle to reliably provide small game. Pests, yes.

It is still a great idea, and one I have wanted to implement, but other things have just got in the way.

Just my opinion.

My preference for air guns is also related to the low cost of ammunition.  They can be cast from automotive wheel weights or recovered bullets from gun ranges.  This is a fairly large source for the pellets, even in a PAW situation.

The other positive point is that they don't need rifle powder, which may be more difficult to obtain, post "event".  Even making "black powder" from sodium nitrate and sulfur doesn't work in rim fire cartridge guns.

Which is why I plan to use .32 ACP in a .30 caliber rifle, instead of rimfires, using a chamber adapter.

The .32 ACP IS nearly silent out of a rifle barrel, and, of course, reloadable and is decent in a good pocket pistol.

Just my opinion.

For most people, dedicating time to hunting, as well as, rod and reel fishing is not an efficient use of their time. Hunting will be an opportunistic event while you are doing other things.  Snares, traps, set lines that can catch food 24/7 would much more efficient needing only to be checked once a day and not, necessarily, your prime workers or security people. Small game and fish would be the major protein supplement.  A few years back, we set a night game camera in a clump of trees at the edge of a field a little over 100 yards from the house. There was a pine wind break just back on the inner perimeter fence. A little salt and a few handfuls of corn where set out and I was amazed at number of critters that came for a hand out. Several deer came, a bunch of rabbits, a small flock of wild turkeys, several raccoons, a couple of red fox and even a few stray chickens (from my neighbors). All this was at dawn, dusk or the dark of night.
Conclusion:
•   The game is out there and willing to come in close.
•   If you are going to plant corn or grains, they will come to eat it.
•   Your security is going to have to oversee your food crops to protect it from 2 and 4 legged pilfering.
•   This provides an opportunity bag some game and vermin without expending additional man hours.

Doesn't the ACP cartridge still need a primer?

Do you have specific air/spring  guns in mind?  If so, please share.
