This is a multi-part article and I will update as the other parts (five) become available.

Part 1)  https://survivalblog.com/radio-communication-methods-emergencies-part-1-r-nc/
This part is an introduction to basic radio terms, bands and what can be realistically expected for communication distances.  It addresses both Amateur Radio (FCC licensed) and non-licensed (FRS-GMRS-CB) radio devices.
The next parts are to be about specific hardware.

Part 2)  https://survivalblog.com/radio-communication-methods-emergencies-part-2-r-nc/

This part cell phones (UHF), Marine Radio (VHF), MURS (VHF), FRS (UHF), and CB (HF).  Recommendations are given on use and methods of getting maximum range for each band.

Part 3)  https://survivalblog.com/radio-communication-methods-emergencies-part-3-r-nc/

FCC licensing requirements, propagation factors (day vs night, dead zones).  Programming software (CHIRP) and features to consider when shopping for transceivers.

Part 4)  https://survivalblog.com/radio-communication-methods-emergencies-part-4-r-nc/

Talks about VHF/UHF radios, Chinese "low cost" units, like the Baofengs, with some pros and cons. Antenna tuners and antennas.  Why the FCC license exists and why it is "self regulated" by HAMs themselves.

Part 5)  https://survivalblog.com/radio-communication-methods-emergencies-part-5-r-nc/

Discusses the process of getting your Amateur Radio Operators license from the FCC.  Advises on way to set up a plan of communications (not just going on air and calling CQ) with some vary good detail and recommendations.  Finally, gives some ideas on how to set up your own communications center (your HAM shack).
