(upd - 6/4/17) Article - Keeping Ledger Books
« on: June 03, 2017, 10:11:31 AM »
This is a series of articles on the topic of keeping a ledger book.  That is a physical notebook on which are recorded various information relating to your daily, weekly, monthly and annual activities.  It is not so much a dairy as a set of books which allow you to track your real costs, in both time and money, for those things which you do in your life.

Part 2)  https://survivalblog.com/homestead-financial-ledger-books-part-2-s-t/

DO NOTE: In part 1, the various activities which a family or group might engage, such as the making of seed packets and packet storage boxes, making soaps or making toilet paper (you do plan on making your own, right?)

The ledger also is a way to schedule activities during the year, so you don't forget or the activity doesn't get overwhelmed by other chores.

Use ledger books works now, and in a post "event" world.  Yes, you can do this on a computer, but in this particular case, I think that having a written record and having the experience of physically writing that record, will be of greater benefit than simply working with a spreadsheet and word processor.  A second benefit is that you may not have access to that computer in a PAW scenario...

The books themselves are described in the article, being simple notebooks which can be purchase cheaply and in quantity.  Each notebook may take a year to fill, so buying in bulk will not be overly expensive and will not take a great deal of storage space.  The author recommends that each member of your family or group keep their own ledger which I think is a good idea and encourages taking time to think about what living actually involves...

DO note that the records need not be simply dry financial accounting.  You may (and should) record more specific details about the operations of your family or group.  This will give you a record of what works and what does not,  of what you tried and what you found most useful.  Do include instructions for building, maintaining and operating the various parts of your community.  That includes how to work with people and equipment.

The first part as has link to some historical ledger books which may give you some ideas for your book keeping.

Part 2 goes into more detail on monthly planning and how/what might be put in the ledger(s).  The author gives us information about how it has worked for them plus a recommendation for the use of a formal accounting and receipts book for business transactions.

There is also a paragraph relating to home schooling and how the ledger system may be part of the lesson plans.  You may not be home schooling now but, if you have or plan to have children, it should be an integral part of your prepper plans.  If you think you're not capable of home schooling your children, remember that you cannot be worse than the present public school system... There is also a vast amount of documents, manuals and advise online, specifically about and for home schooling.
