Title: Artilcle - 20 Root Vegetables to Grow Instead of Grains

All of these, IMO, are good choices.  Not all will grow in your climate, so do some local research and check with local plant and garden shops.

I highly recommend sweet potatoes which are a perennial and can be started indoors.  I grow one on my window sill.  It has expanded to three pots over several years.  These are climbing vines and need vertical space (at least 3 feet).  They are also an attractive plant to have indoors.  Expect to do some vine pruning to remove dead vines and leaves.  Technically, you can harvest seeds from them, if you allow the plant to be pollinated.  I've had no luck with indoor hand pollination.
