I you have such a unit, or plan on buying one, this thread (long thread) has many user comments, suggestions and recommendations.

This brand is not the only one available, but the information may be applicable to other units.

Worth the read if you do or plan to, use a freeze dryer.

[edit] My opinions on using these units:

1)  Be aware that this type of drying uses a fairly large amount of electrical energy.  Plan on this before you buy.

2) These units all require "consumable" supplies, such as replacement oil for the vacuum pump,  which may not be available after TSHTF...

3) These are heavy units, NOT a tabletop appliance, plan on a dedicated space for use and operation.

4) Cost is comparable to a FULL SET of Major appliance, such as refrigerator, stove, microwave.  Read the thread for some price reports.
