Josh K7ZIM
I got no audio tonight batterys almost dead. I may not be in long if it dies on me.
Hi twp
8:05:35 PM
TWP
Need new battery?
8:05:51 PM
Rob K9RVM
I understand. Ken's radio shack is giving him an issue tonight and he went to his backup so he's not on the chat tonight. I'm filling in for him.
8:06:08 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Its my phone. Its time to upgrade but im cheap so waiting for a deal. Lol
8:06:58 PM
TWP
Josh, can you run the phone while it is charging?
8:07:22 PM
Josh K7ZIM
I can but im at work and dont have a charger.
8:07:28 PM
TWP

8:07:59 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Thats why im never on the radio for the nets, im at work.
Lmao! Ya i usually have one but forgot it at home.

RE tonight's topic, I have some plans for a case where we get an alert, but times to reach various bug-out locations are longer than I like
8:11:56 PM
Josh K7ZIM
And if an alert goes nation wide, imagine the chaos it would cause. Gotta think about that in your times as well.
8:12:53 PM
Rob K9RVM
agreed. we did see an example of that from this last mistaken message that went out.
8:13:56 PM
TWP
Yes, my optimum travel times are still in the 30 minute range.  Worst case, we can head for the nearest casino with a basement.   On foot, that is still 15 minutes away
8:13:57 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Ya and that was only a half hour before it was fixed. I imagin reno would be crazy with people
Im 5min from nas fallon so I'll just go outside, light a smoke and wait for the flash.
8:15:03 PM
Rob K9RVM
I have a friend who worked there and I saw the example of what happened and quite frankly, I could see how it happened but the correct measures were taken to correct the error from happening again.
8:15:02 PM
TWP
some of my possible shelters are in downtown Reno, but if people panic, that could be a bad direction to go...
I'm guessing that we'll see a rejuvenation of the old Civil Defense systems.
Rob; I wonder why they had no double check on the alert initiation process.  Like two people need to do simultaneous pushing of the buttons
8:18:53 PM
Rob K9RVM
Dave, no. That's not how it was built and it was a simple mistake. Now that it occurred they have changed their procedures to prevent it from happening again.
8:20:44 PM
TWP
TWP please, when I'm online...  So you've saying that there is a single point of alert control?  I expect that here are more than one location, but any one of them can issue the alert?
8:21:50 PM
Rob K9RVM
Not in that particular area. It's a centralized control system. Although that sounds odd, it really is for all the right reasons.
In the states though, there are several layers of control
8:23:34 PM
TWP
Good question, how much time might we have?  Widely variable...
8:24:25 PM
Rob K9RVM
The intention of the public alert systems is to ensure the necessary information is disseminated as quickly as possible so there could be a risk that someone gets it wrong but there are really good people working those systems to make sure all the right things happen as quickly as they can for public safety.
8:25:55 PM
TWP
I'm familiar with the EAS system and I'm reading reports on how it is being used.  Mostly that is storm or fire warnings.
I'm also very leery of social media as a source of information, particularly during a crisis.  Too much information and too few "official" sources.
Not reliable for good information....
What Jerry is talking about, verification of social media reports... too much noise on the system from too many users.
8:42:14 PM
Rob K9RVM
Agreed. Far to many people speculating without enough informed information I would suspect.
8:42:37 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Hmm, ya i dont think id rely solely on social media to base my decisions on. But then again, i wouldnt rely on the governments intel either. Lol
8:45:01 PM
Rob K9RVM
If I have to choose, I think for the severity of this kind of event, I would trust government broadcasts over some of my friends on social media. I run with a goofy group of guys.
8:45:31 PM
TWP
Reno used (past tense) have some good talk radio stations which I listened to for information.  They've gone away in the last few years.  Does anyone know of good radio broadcast news shows?  Not amateur radio, but commercial AM/FM?
8:46:20 PM
Josh K7ZIM
I like coast to coast, but thats only late night.
8:47:43 PM
TWP
C2C was good until Art Bell left and when to Sirius paid channels.  I'm looking for something I can listen to 24/7
Went to Sirius... Bad fingers...
8:48:50 PM
Josh K7ZIM
I actually like George better then art. Been a listener since the 90s.
8:49:52 PM
TWP
I spent many hours listening to George Noory too.  As you say, only late night.
8:50:35 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Isnt kkoh any good? I dont get it out here so havent listed in years.
8:51:40 PM
Rob K9RVM
I think KKOH does a pretty good job keeping the public informed of local news. they normally seem to be the first to report emerging events.
8:51:44 PM
TWP
KKOH sold themselves and change format,  It was good while it lasted.
I'll have to try them again, perhaps they responded to user commentary and went back to a news format?
8:53:49 PM
Josh K7ZIM
I used to get it out here but the cut their oower down about 10 years ago and its sparatic at best.
8:54:35 PM
TWP
Same here, I was in California when I first heard KKOH,
Re the last caller, I look at it (in hindsight) as a learning experience.  What happened could happen again...
9:01:11 PM
Rob K9RVM
Get net all. Thank you for joining the chat tonight.
9:01:37 PM
TWP
Rob, thank Ken for me.  Good net as always.
