I think many people get things for prepping, perhaps even practice with it a few times, and then put it away for when needed. Unfortunately, for many items, including some that Ken is bringing up, only having one of that item, not matter how good, can fail, be lost, or simply worn out. This usually means it is a lengthy situation, but they do happen. I try to have multiple of a type, for just in case, and for long situations.

I like Swiss mountain guard dog. Big, very loyal, loves children and if anything is different in their area they let you know immediately. Very intelligent and easily trainable. Mine is very loud but not aggressive in that he does not attack.
