I thought i saw glenda in and out. Oh well.
Twp did you attend the camping trip?
8:08:47 PM
TWP
Josh, no I did not attend.  I wish I could report on it...
Hi tprepper, welcome to the NNPG Radio Net chat room.  Sorry,, we are in a "dry" phase due to the lack of an audio feed from the SNARS network.
8:10:28 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Oh well. Wish i had gone as well.
8:10:49 PM

8:15:12 PM
Josh K7ZIM
We have no audio so not alot goin on here. Lol
Hows maryland?
8:15:33 PM
AI6OO-Keith
Bummer with no audio.
8:15:47 PM
TWP
Josh, not unless we can find something we need to discuss between us
8:16:39 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Well i attended a local clubs field day. Had a good time and made over 100 ft8 contacts.
8:16:43 PM
TWP
Keith,  No word on how long before another HAM will volunteer to run a 24/7 receiver on the SNARS system
8:17:25 PM
AI6OO-Keith
The topic is  what tonight?
8:18:24 PM
TWP
first aid kits, medical preps and learning first aid.
This is also one of my weaker preps.
We have IFAK (Individual First Aid Kits) but nothing fancy
8:19:23 PM
AI6OO-Keith
Just got in Frederick aboiut an hour ago.
My wife is an RN so she takes the med kits  quite seriously
8:20:17 PM
TWP
Keith, beware, you getting close to DC... Hope it doesn't rub off on youi
8:20:37 PM
AI6OO-Keith
I will be in DC for the 4th.
8:20:39 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Ya me too twp. Mostly because they are parishable. I try to stock up on antibiotics and disinfectants.
8:20:59 PM
TWP
I'm also seeing a slight delay on chat message response...
8:21:34 PM
AI6OO-Keith
Look at what you can use as splints  and tourniquets
8:21:55 PM
TWP
I'd like to take another course in first aid, but don't know of a good place, locally.
I have evaluated our camping gear (poles and straps) for just that use.
8:23:15 PM
AI6OO-Keith
The REOC may have courses they sponsor that you could possibly attend/
8:23:30 PM
TWP
Ken just sent his encouragement for us to do what we can toight.
REOC?
8:24:18 PM
AI6OO-Keith
I took an EMT course, got licensed for a year.  Still have the book and it really has alot of great info.
8:24:51 PM
TWP
Keith, it's been decades since my last course and it was not intensive.
I'd like to keep some antibiotic stock too, I'm looking at fish meds.
8:25:40 PM
Josh K7ZIM
I try to always have an asortment of bandaids and triple antibiotic ointment on hand. For any big trauma, i have needle and thread. I was a first resopnder so i have that knowledge somewhere in my brain.
8:26:11 PM
AI6OO-Keith
You do not have to be a doctor, in most emergencies it is control the bleeding, keep them warm, calm, possible splint if needed.  You cannot do a whole lot.
8:26:25 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Efishmox.com twp. They have bundle deals every so often.
8:26:35 PM
TWP
Josh, I've got those items too, they are easy to buy in the pharmacy and most grocery stores.
8:27:12 PM
AI6OO-Keith
People do put on suturing classes, they usually use pig feet.  There are tricks to doing stiches.
8:27:19 PM
TWP
Keith, yeah, major surgery is outside my skill set.
8:27:40 PM
Josh K7ZIM
If you have a ranch supy store like big r, you can basically buy all kinds of stuff for "animal" use too.
8:27:57 PM
TWP
And I have stitched myself up a couple of times.  No big scares, and I'm still alive...
8:28:16 PM
AI6OO-Keith
Tractor supply has a fair amount of meds also.
8:28:32 PM
TWP
I'll check those sources, thanks.
I'm not sure of Ken/Glenda will be able to get a copy of this chat session, but I'll try to do a copy/paste as we get to the end.
8:29:51 PM
AI6OO-Keith
Green feed and supply probably has stuff also.
8:30:14 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Also upholstery needles work 8n a pinch for sutures. Heavy nylon thread for the sewing up.
8:30:21 PM
TWP
I think they are up the hill, north of Reno?  Not sure anymore, but I have seen the sign.
I used fishline, small gauge on myself.  Came out fairly easily if not without a little pain.
8:32:14 PM
AI6OO-Keith
Yep, that is them.  North Virginia I believe, near the old casino up there.  Across the freeway from REOC
Dental Floss can work also, not flavored.
8:32:48 PM
TWP
I've been seeing many different kits, of varying levels of usefulness,  Some are just too pricey, others might be better quality.
REOC?
8:33:41 PM
AI6OO-Keith
A medical person can put a kit together with probably more pertinent stuff.
8:34:17 PM
TWP
Wish we had a local doctor in NNPG,  We could use their input.
8:34:22 PM
AI6OO-Keith
Also depends on what you intend to do.  Concentrate on your skill level.
8:35:16 PM
TWP
Keith,  I'm good with smaller wounds, but major illness will be a problem.
8:35:32 PM
AI6OO-Keith
Perhaps the doctor that works wikth SBTS bike races.
8:35:47 PM
TWP
Emergencies with severe injury... Well.  as you say stabilize and get more help.
I don't know SBTS but I've heard it mentioned before.
8:36:51 PM
AI6OO-Keith
In a real severe disaster we will lose many people that would easily be saved today.
8:37:11 PM
TWP
Sad,, but a reality of life.
8:37:28 PM
Josh K7ZIM
It'll be more about preventing injury i think. Not doing high risk tasks that could end badly, or planning to minimize any risks.
8:38:10 PM
AI6OO-Keith
SBTS sponsors several really high level bike races and constructs trails.  Lost and Found, Grinduro, and a big one in Sierra county.
8:38:22 PM
TWP
In the past, when we were having monthly meetings, we did go over some med kit content, but lacked someone who could offer training.
8:39:12 PM
Josh K7ZIM
You all watch alone on discovery? The first one to tap out was taken out by a fish hook in her hand. It can be something so simple.
8:39:30 PM
AI6OO-Keith
In my grandfathers and Dad's younger days many people died from an axe skipping off a log and hitting their leg.
8:40:25 PM
TWP
Josh, agreed.  I don't want to try if there is a probability of help soon.  After a day or more I would try suturing or if there were need to close the wound.
8:40:46 PM
AI6OO-Keith
I saw that one, partly her fault, she got all excited about catching fish and got a little sloppy about grabbing the fish.
8:41:32 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Odd to say but tampons and maxipads work great to control bleeding.
8:41:59 PM
TWP
Keith, That is still happening, but less chance of death.  In a post-event world, those deaths will come back...
8:42:08 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Ya and she could have gotten it out had she just pushed it through. But i was sad to see her go.
8:42:50 PM
AI6OO-Keith left the channel (quit)
8:43:01 PM
TWP
It's an entertainment venue and they will milk it for whatever they can.  She was probably ok a few hours later,..
8:43:45 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Ya shes a trainer in flint and steel on facebook.
8:43:50 PM
TWP
Not sure if Keith intended to leave or not...
8:44:03 PM
AC1BN - Fred left the channel (timeout)
8:44:33 PM
TWP
Guess we are it Josh <g>
8:44:34 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Everyones leaving
Yup
8:45:29 PM
TWP
I'm not sure why, except for Fred, he got timed out because he wasn't hitting a period (.) occasionally.
If nobody else logs back in shortly, we could call it a night.
8:46:33 PM
Josh K7ZIM
It happens. Well guess I'll tap out to gotta get back to work. Have a good week twp.
8:46:50 PM
TWP
Thanks Josh.  Talk to you later

Here are some of my thoughts on First-Aid and other medical preparations for preppers. There are two attachments. One with some general information I think relevant, and my Home Only-Aid Kit.

Not everything is for the beginner, by far. But I think it important for the beginner to see the big picture, and determine how they will approach their training and equipment acquisition.

If there are any questions, feel free to ask.

Just my opinion.

In the interest of contributing something of value - since I don't make the sessions - I might recommend once more Survival and Austere Medicine: An Introduction (3rd Edition), which is being hosted somewhere on the forum here. Lots of info an what meds to stash, how to use them, and reference recommends based on your situation as far as training or not.

We are also trying to work out a Vol II since we have so much leftover info. This would be in addition to and not instead of the last edition.

Rascal;

The link to Survival and Austere Medicine: An Introduction (3rd Edition)

For those who look at the NNPG archives, it is ABOVE the list in a full paragraph of introduction.
