I did when i had my space and garden. It was pretty simple, don't know if it was the right way tho. I had 4 stacked tires that i threw all my garden trimmings in and as it decomposed it got lower. Every spring i would pull the tires off and mix the compost into the soil. Never seemed to hurt the plants. Lol!

Ken, your getting washed out by noise from another source
Hi Josh
I can't do compost in the apartment, but I do have several years of experience when I had a farm in WA

I do make a small batch of compost for my window sill pots, Mostly it's a mix of plant pieces, egg shell and kitchen vegetable waste (potato, onion, carrot etc.)

How small an area?
I used 15" tires. Took up about 2 sq feet.
Vertically it was about 3 or 4 feet tall.

When I had the farm, I was able to get shredded trees from the county crew. That was mostly willow and pine. I let is set over a season without doing any more than turning it over every couple of week. At the end of the year, It was tilled into the garden.
Note that this was in WA state, lots of rain

Hi Ken, Hi Glenda. Can yo guys check me in for tonight. I've got peaches canning and I'm in the middle of the process. By the way those rotary barrels make great composters for small areas. My secret was chicken poop, straw, and anything green the I cut. Heat Moisture, and air are the key. I've got go. 73's all.

Have given up on the radio. Reception is terrible.

Sure can NSV

A note on the smell. Good compost can be IDd by the good earthen smell, when it is ready. If it really stinks, it is still composting and need more time and turning over.
8:19:37 PM
KG7NSV
Dirt smell is best.
8:19:54 PM

Keith try listening to the live feed from the website.

Check for tree crews who may have sawdust available for small batch compost. It has lots of nitrogen, but needs to be broken down before adding to soil

I just run the tree limbs I cut down thru my chipper. Chickens love to lay their eggs in nests lined with cedar chips. Cedar also helps them get rid of parasites as it is a natural insect repellent.
8:26:20 PM
Josh K7ZIM
How about composting toilets?
8:28:03 PM

My understanding is the Humanure is good stuff, but needs to be fully processed to avoid human targeted pathogens. Do some research before trying that.
8:29:07 PM
Josh K7ZIM
I've heard about them but never did any research on it.

My grandam always did cowpie tea like that. In a bucket of water and leave it for a few weeks then pour it over the plants.

Oh, I also added some rabbit manure to my compost piles. I only had 8-10 rabbits and that was not much manure, but it is good for gardens. It really doesn't need composting, but it doesn't burn plants if directly applied to the plant beds. NOTE: Horse manure has a high salt content and needs to run through a full compost cycle with plenty of water washing.
8:32:38 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Good to know twp. I didn't know about the salts!
Thanks jerry!
8:35:22 PM

Ask Jerry about horse manure composting; different than cows, goats?

He just covered using horse manure. Do you want more detail on something?
8:36:06 PM
AI600-Keith
Time to put goats and chickens away for the night and collect the eggs. Can grind egg shells up and feed to the chickens to give them calcium to make more eggs. Good Night all.
8:36:15 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Ok Keith.
Thanks for joining us
