Tonight's topic is Leather For The Prepper, how to use it, tan it, work it.

something like a simple pouch Ken?
8:19:32 PM
Ken K7KBJ
YES !!!
It sounds like I'm not the only one interested !
Are you listening to the net, Todd?
8:19:54 PM
AI6OO-KeithM
I like the idea ofof a leather workshop.
8:20:05 PM
KG7MZO
Hey Todd. Just want to thank you for taking care of the barter event. The flyers look amazing and I'm looking very forward to seeing everyone

Ken K7KBJ

8:20:15 PM
todd

8:20:25 PM
Ken K7KBJ

AI6OO-KeithM

Hi Keith
8:21:01 PM

You are very welcome. Although David is the craftsman who created the flyer.
8:21:02 PM
KG7NSV
I think leather skills would be a great subject for the prepper.
8:21:10 PM
AI6OO-KeithM
Hello all tonight
8:21:39 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Tonight's topic is Leather For The Prepper, how to use it, tan it, work it.
8:21:48 PM
todd
i just wrangled it all together
8:22:41 PM
AI6OO-KeithM
I have never tanned a hide, but I sure have a lot of deer on my property.
8:23:42 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Tanned hides would be an extremely valuable barter item to have.
8:24:36 PM
todd
I have read that you can use the brain of an animal to tan the hide.
8:25:14 PM
AI6OO-KeithM
Using the the brain appears to work pretty well.
8:25:37 PM
Ken K7KBJ
That's really interesting
8:26:58 PM
todd
Urine was another method. Both of which will smell awful
8:27:13 PM
KG7NSV
Brain tanning, yup. I'm thinking about trying that soon. They say every animal has enough brains to tan it's own skin.
8:27:14 PM
todd
which is why the tanneries were outside of town
8:27:21 PM
AI6OO-KeithM
you have to clean the hide very well of meat and fat break the fibers up some and then apply the liquified brain to the hide.
8:27:31 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Does the odor eventually go away?
8:27:44 PM
KG7NSV
You smoke it
8:28:08 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Oh! Great idea.
8:28:13 PM
KG7NSV
Seals in the tan and makes the smell go away
8:28:24 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Outstanding
8:28:37 PM
KG7NSV
Lighter skins work best....deer...goat
8:28:37 PM
AI6OO-KeithM
if worst comes to worst smell may not be a big concern.
8:28:56 PM
KG7NSV
tell that to my wife
8:29:02 PM
Ken K7KBJ
It's my coat, not me !
8:29:37 PM
AI6OO-KeithM
rabbit can make some nice warm hides.
8:30:15 PM
todd
I would like to get a good pattern for some moccasins
one thing to mention is caring for the leather is important.
I use a 50% 50% beeswax and neatsfoot oil
8:34:37 PM
AI6OO-KeithM
beeswax is getting harder to fine with the huge bee die off going on.
8:35:01 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Sounds like beeswax would also be a very good barter item to stock.
8:35:34 PM
todd
oh yeah, candles leatherwork and all kinds of things
8:35:58 PM
KG7NSV
Got 6 fresh ounces out of my bee hive this years. Love bee wax
8:36:45 PM
todd
beekeeping is something that I would love to do. I'd make mead with the honey!
8:36:48 PM
AI6OO-KeithM
everybody's hive around me died this winter including our two hives.
8:37:17 PM
todd
dang thats terrible
8:37:57 PM
Ken K7KBJ
That is some bad news Keith.
8:37:55 PM
KG7NSV
I'm working on a geothermal hive for next year
No more dead bees
8:38:12 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Mmmmmm sulfer honey !
Well, good night everyone, I have some chores to do.
8:38:48 PM
KG7NSV
No sulfer, sealed pipes buried
8:38:56 PM
KG7MZO left the channel (timeout)
8:38:56 PM
KG7NSV
&#'s
8:39:08 PM
todd

8:39:16 PM
AI6OO-KeithM
i like the geothermal concept.
