Good evening everyone
Keeping an eye on the Truckee River. The news is going on about flooding potential similar to the flooding that occurred in the industrial area of Sparks similar to 2005.
8:25:02 PM
TWP
Rob, You location did get flooded in 2005, I was there to see it.
8:25:24 PM
N7SAX
No way on a flood in my opinion... There is no snow pack
Like there was in '97
8:25:56 PM
Ken K7KBJ
I subscribed to the truckee river flow meter alert system. So far we're good but watching that for sure !
8:25:58 PM
TWP
SAX, you have a point. The 2005 flood was snow melt
8:26:13 PM
K9RVM
Hopefully this immediate area won't be subjected to flooding. And I work near where I live now and I remember having to evacuate our work location. It was pretty significant. I'm not too sure how this area faired back in 2005 since I wan't living here then.
Let me know if you hear something Ken. We're right around the corner from your work location.
8:27:39 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Rob, I'll also shoot you a link to the USGS Water Meter alert system for the river. It's really pretty cool.
8:27:56 PM
K9RVM
thanks Ken. I'll add it to my phone.
8:36:55 PM
TWP
Rob, the overpass just downstream from you location is a semi dam and backs water up into your location.
8:37:06 PM
N7SAX
Ken, I look forward to meeting you in person.
8:38:38 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Same here, SAX.
8:38:51 PM
K9RVM
TWP - yeah, I was aware of that one and the news mentioned that flooding is already occurring by Vista
8:39:19 PM
Ken K7KBJ
I have not received any water flow alerts for the river as of yet.
I hope the alert system is not down

Thanks Ken!

Re my request for information on using ionic or colloidal silver for disinfection of water:

What I know is that metallic silver will server as a algaecide, for example the wagon train pioneers used a silver coin in their water barrels to avoid algae.

But will other forms of silver (compounds or colloids), work against bacteria or virus?

Lots of questionable claims can be found on the 'net, but I'm not a doctor (nor play one on TV) so I cannot verify anything.

Does anyone have some authoritative source on this?

Thank you Ken.

TWP, I have not found a reliabe source that says flat out that the different silver compounds work. Nor some of the ionic chemical claims. But definitely not ionic silver.

I will keep trying to find out more about the silver, as well as essential oils for water purification.

And when I get my laptop back, hopefully next Tuesday, and get caught up on the internet again, I will post some of my additional thoughts on water purification, as well as some of the other subjects I have wanted to contribute to, but could not.

Just my opinion.

Got my laptop back, so here are my additional opinions on water purification/filtration/treatment:

Water purification vs water filtration vs water treatment:
Unfortunately, far too many people fail to understand the differences between purification, filtration, and treatment. And it could be a deadly mistake in some situations. Purification removes all biological contaminates for the most part, including viruses. Filtration systems will not get out the deadlier viruses. Some treatments can get all the biologicals, but not all the common ones will.

Filtration will usually get out particulates, as well as the larger biologicals.

Purification usually includes filtration.

If you understand that if you might need to get rid of viruses from your water and get a purifier, then you do not necessarily have good potable water. The water could have things other than the biologicals and particulates. Taste, odors, and many types of chemicals can also be in the water that make it taste terrible at best, but could also be dangerous. So treating the water to remove these should be a part of overall purification and filtration systems. Some of the filtration systems on the market do this. Not many of the purifiers do.

So, when you are looking to make safe, potable water, consider everything you might need to remove from it. Biologicals, including viruses, sediment and particulates, tastes, odors, and chemicals. Many of the available systems and plans for DIY systems do not mention the things that they do not do, only those things that the device or system will do. You have to be the one to read the fine print, read between the lines, and consider what is being left out of the literature or documentation. Now, if you prefer a specific unit for one function that does not do everything needed, you can often add a stage to the system to get out the other items. Just be sure you are taking out everything necessary for good, healthy water.

Just my opinion.

Let me add one method to the possible ways to get potable water:  distillation

This will remove MOST (not all) poisonous chemicals, however it is very unlikely that your water will contain a poison which will evaporate and be carried over to your receiving flask.  So this is a good method.

Even with distillation, it remains a good idea to filter your water FIRST, to remove large particles which can collect in the boiler.
