(upd - 5/25/17) Article - A Get Home Bag For Teenagers

This is a multi-part article and I will update this post as the other parts are posted:

Part 1)  https://survivalblog.com/get-home-bag-teenagers-part-1-n-r/

Part 2)  https://survivalblog.com/get-home-bag-teenagers-part-2-n-r/

Part 3)  https://survivalblog.com/get-home-bag-teenagers-part-3-n-r/

The scenario used by the author assumes a moderately long distance which your teenager(s) may need to travel to get "home", wherever that destination may be.  The authors example of 10 miles may not seem like much to an adult, but to a younger person, particularly ones who are used to riding in vehicles, it may be difficult.

This is where training and practice are most important.  Give them some experience with hiking and using the contents of the Get-Home-Bag.  Have a plan for rendezvous and communication, have more than one such plan...

Part 2 makes a statement with which I agree:  MREs are too expensive and too heavy for backpack carry.  The author makes recommendations for lightweight foods which are easy to prepare, if preparation is even needed.

Also addressed in Part 2 are water filters, first aid, communications and knives.  The last iyrm may be a problem if they are carried in to the public school system.  That problem (knife carry) might be addressed by making several caches along probable travel routes which your child might take.  I'm going to assume that you have given your child enough training that they understand the need for OPSEC about such caches.   It will be a temptation to "show off" to friends and reveal a cache...
