Tomato Blossom End Rot Treatment

Occasionally I will read articles about what causes Blossom End Rot in fruit, mostly seen in tomatoes.

It is caused by two things, lack of water and lack of Calcium.

This is my simple solution.

Make a Calcium Tea by adding several crushed egg shells to a quart of water.

Add two tablespoons of Vinegar.  It doesn't matter what kind of Vinegar, so use the cheap stuff.

Shake and let stand overnight.  Some of the eggshell will dissolve, but you probably will not be able to see any change in the eggshell.

Water your plants with the Calcium Tea, at the edge of the circle formed by the leaf canopy.   Don't splash it on the plant.  Retain the eggshells and continue to use them.  Replenish whenever you use eggs...

Now \water the plant as you would normally do, which will push the Calcium down to the root structure.

Check the soil moisture by picking up a handful from the root depth.  Just dig a small hole near, but not in the root zone.  It should be damp (moist to the touch), but not dripping.

Fruit that already has end rot can (should) be removed.  These fruit are not bad, just cut away the end spot and use as you normally would.  Green Tomato Preserves are tasty...

New fruit should now grow without Blossom End Rot...

Apply the Calcium Tea once a week,  Water whenever the soil drys out.

If you prefer to use chemical fertilizer, then look for Calcium Sulphate (sulfate) as an ingredient and follow the directions for application.  Remember to water regularly and whenever the soil becomes dry at the root level.
