We save many glass jars for storage... However only for dry foods and not canning.

I recycle my plastic ketchup and relish jars by refilling them from bulk containers.  These go into the refrigerator after opening and last for many refills.  I do use hot water/soap to wash them out and thoroughly dry after each use.

The large bulk food containers turn out to make reasonable book shelf spacers.  Coffee jars are really good for this.

This article is a good read on what you MAY want to do with your empty glass food jars.

I learned a few things about the design of more recently made jars.

YMMV so I advise erring on the side of caution when reusing NON-Canning jars in your hot bath or pressure canner.
