It's time to get our WINTER ON!
Looking at calendars, life in general and the moons phase in pluto, this is the date, until we change it! MARCH 12-13
Holding this date at the moment for the camp whilst we get ideas on what everyone would like to do.
We have done many camps and I would like to know, WHAT THE HECK DO YOU NEED TO LEARN? Lets look at what we need to know, that we have not gotten to.
I will do knots and ropes and will expand on it this time round.
We may need a new camp location as well. With all the snow dances and rain dances we have done, it's worked. Along with that, comes areas with limited access, roads get tough for all to use.
Along with education ideas, I will be looking for another location as well.
So chime in and let me know your thoughts (constructive now). 8)
Thanks
Vic

Can you please consider doing the navigation/radio exercise again?
-
Would like to see some specialty fire lays, such as a Dakota Fire hole, on top of snow/wet ground fires, etc.
Assuming at least a few inches of snow, would like to do an igloo with my igloo building tool, do a snow cave if there is enough snow or a suitable nearby snow bank, do an exercise showing how much snow needs to be melted to get 16 ounces of water.
Pulk/sled systems, how to pack them and how to use and control them.
Building tent/shelter windbreaks and fire pit windbreaks.
Methods of (successfully) getting a cord/rope into a tree for supporting antennas, bear boxes, and tents/tarps.
Amateur radio fox hunt. (Might not be the best time for this, though.)
Proper use of axes, hatchets, tomahawks, manual saws.
That is all I can think of off the top of my head.
Just my opinion.
-
I'd like to see fire starting demo'd, as in using a manual or bow drill starter and using polished aluminum cans as mirrors to start fires (assuming we have sun...)
I second the Dakota fire hole demo. A 'rocket-stove' built from local rock and mud is also good to know.

I will probably bring my HF radio to play with throughout the day in case anyone wants to work with that. When we had the Kid's Field Day outing, my vertical antenna worked out really well and I want to experiment with it some more. I will also be trying an NVIS antenna which will just be a long wire laying on the ground. Both Jerry and I will probably have our new ICOM radios so one of those might be there as well.
-
I do plan to bring the ICOM, a manual antenna tunner, and the MFJ patio antenna with a stand to see how well that works, along with my 12v power system.

BAD NEWS and GOOD NEWS.... ::)
So which do you want first.... :o
Bad news is the Winter camp is off. >:( Due to business needs cannot do this in March.
Good news is let's do a Spring Camp. ;D Looking at April 23-24 weekend.
I am going to close this event and open one for the Spring Camp to keep things clear.
sorry to change things up but business is business!

A man (or woman) has gotta do what a man (or woman) has gotta do.
Prepping is about making adjustments when required. So I will just adjust.
Thanks for letting us know.

Jerry,
That has to be the most carefully crafted, non-offensive, gender neutral, prepper neutral, all sides at the table response I have seen.
You absolutely offended no body.... :o making notes....New name for Jerry, Mr Elastic!

lol
What can I say? My sisters beat it into my head when I was about 8.
Just my opinion.
-
That's a bummer, I was looking forward to playing in the snow this year. Maybe I'll go anyway, ;)
-
Sorry to hear that, however we can understand that "business" always come first. Want to thank you for trying to do it and look forward to the Spring one.
-
I thought that I would let you know that PrepperCon is the weekend before the new date you picked for the Spring Camp out.. I don't know if that will have any effect on people attending. We will be at the camp out for sure....can't wait.
-
I plan to be at both. Looking forward to both, too.
-
I see there's nothing on the calendar re the spring camp. Is that because the date hasn't been finalized?
-
Never mind. I just found the Future Camps thread and that sounds way above what we're ready for. This will be our first time and even though I'm sure invaluable experience would/could be gained, right now we're at the very beginning, like how to set up a tent.

EamI,
That is fine for this camp. We WILL have a summer camp at an established campground we use and your first trip would work fine there.
You can also come out for the day instead of staying the entire trip and participate and see what the camps are like.

With all of the scheduling issues, the camp just would not come together.
So we will concentrate on Spring Camp.
That will be Memorial Day weekend and I will post up the info on that.
We will do Sat and Sun for that one and hope to expand what we do.
thanks for putting up with the issues,
Vic

Well worth a few issues and a delay to get these camps. They are great social events, and excellent training sessions. Thanks for all the work, Vic. It is appreciated.
