This is really about Foraging for PART of your food needs, rather than formal gardening/farming.

I think in contains some sound advice on both WHICH FOODS to concentrate your foraging skills upon and WHY.

http://survivalskills.guide/gathering-wild-foods-subsistence/

Even if there are no other people/animals trying to survive in the same area, you may not find a garden-of-eden type of resource.

Hence, preps should include at least a minimum amount of seed stock AND you should be looking for seeds as you forage.

You may have to survive on what you have in stores plus whatever you forage, while at the same time, you will be planting for later harvest.

This is why a full years worth of food stock is recommended.

You can expect to get hungry and lose weight...

There was a kinda/sorta true documentary made in 1922.  Nanook of the North.

The Inuit who played Nanook ( Allakariallak ) died from starvation in 1924.  Hunter gatherer means you have to win almost all of the time or ...

Most folks are happy being a part of the Great Shepherds Flock.
Some folks choose to be wolves and prey on the flock.
Some folks choose to defend the flock and confront the wolf.

a full year's worth of food stock is recommended.

This will give you time to ramp up your garden soil preparation and grow more seed for next year when you will grow food in earnest (hopefully). During the first year you should also do your heavy foraging and hunting & trapping.  Still regard this as a food supplement to you stores. Even primitive people, who absolutely know how, require 10 square miles per person to sustainably forage and harvest enough subsistence calories and protein.

At 10 sq. mi. per person, I foresee some conflict arising, particularly near cities and even small towns.

I would think that there would be few places in the lower 48 where you really could. Even the Eastern Indians farmed at least corn to get through the winters.
