Here's a link to a previous radio net we had about this topic to supplement tonight's net
http://nnpg.net/Jul_16_14_radio.shtml
TWP, don't know.
This is free chat software, probably not the best quality.
The timeouts may be browser related as well.
8:12:29 PM
TWP
browser differences could account for that.
Here in Reno, I see a lot of younger people locked into their phones. In downtown, I do see people watching the sidewalk more than the traffic around them.
8:19:46 PM
Ken K7KBJ
One of my tips, get a dog and train it well.
8:22:19 PM

We try to keep our eyes open for homeless and elderly people who might need an extra hand. We
We've been able to help out some folks in public who need some help at times. Especially some of the elderly folks like Ken who can get confused in public.
8:25:32 PM
KG7MZO - Glenda
Ken gets confused easily. Gotta look out for that dude
8:26:07 PM
TWP
Gee, you older types have learned to hide it well <g>
8:26:28 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Wow, Keith made some good points. Listen to the webcast if you missed it !
Jerry is doing the same. Lots of good stuff on the webcast from everyone.
8:29:48 PM
KG7MZO - Glenda
The radio archive show also has some good info. There's some in-depth tips that I researched for that net.
8:31:15 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Here's a cool product I heard about on the radio....

8:32:44 PM
Rob K9RVM
darn...sold out
8:33:05 PM
TWP
I'd also recommend finding a self defense trainer in your local area.
8:33:32 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Budk carries some nice defensive tools as well. And reasonably priced.
Twp, have you taken classes like that before?
8:35:04 PM
TWP
I have not
8:36:13 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Me either. Want to, but i have an aversion to physical contact with people i dont know. Lol! I really need to look into it tho.
8:36:55 PM
TWP
Especially people I don't know...
Keeping the front door locked is a problem here. I am very aware that others don't immediately lock upon entering...
8:41:03 PM
Rob K9RVM
Wearing nice clothes to the opera. Is that how Bruce Wayne lost his parents and became Batman?
8:41:06 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Now thats something i ponder often myself, locking the doors while home.
8:41:23 PM
KG7MZO - Glenda
I always keep the doors locked
8:42:10 PM
TWP
I get up and check them after someone else enters.... So far I'm hitting about 50 unlocked.
50%
8:43:01 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Did you all know that a p52 can opener is considered a weapon when entering a courthouse? Ive had to toss out several because i always carry one in my wallet and forget them in there.
8:43:54 PM
TWP
Dang, I've got two on my keychain right now
8:44:02 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Ya i usually dont do it. But i may have to get in that habbit.
Ya the p38? I think thats the smaller one, is fine but the bigger one is too big apparently. Lol
8:45:18 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Yikes! I'd say, try to stay away from the courthouse! HAHA
8:45:26 PM
TWP
I got hit when I when to the local armed forces office. I had to take my "sharps" back out and stash them on my bike.
8:45:43 PM
Josh K7ZIM
I go for my job. Lmao!
8:46:02 PM
Ken K7KBJ
I had a girlfriend once who could kill with her eyes. I always felt safe with her around me.
8:46:15 PM
TWP
I know that look...
8:48:13 PM
KG7MZO - Glenda

It's very scary

Carry a boat horn ! Good one Fred !
8:54:17 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Has anyone mentioned defensive posture?
8:55:12 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Glenda kind of did. She discussed looking like you are confident and unafraid, stuff like that.
8:55:12 PM
KG7MZO - Glenda
I mentioned that I carry myself with confidence, standing tall and not looking at the ground. Not sure if that is what you mean by defensive posture
8:55:36 PM
TWP
That worked for me when I was confronted on my bike. lock eye contact and moved my hands away from my body. Intimidation factor was in my favor.
8:56:35 PM
Josh K7ZIM
We learned it in security. When interacting with someone you stand at a 45° angle with your stong side facing then presenting minimal target.
Like how cops talk to you, never face to face, always at an angle with their left sholder twards you and right hand free to draw if necessary.
9:01:35 PM
Ken K7KBJ
goodnight everyone !

Finally remembered the other things I planned to mention on my recheck.

1. When in a bathroom, hotel/motel room, any room where someone might have placed hidden cameras, one of the ways to check, is to turn off the lights (if this is possible) and close curtains or whatever, to make the room as dark as possible. Take your bright flashlight, which I am sure you have with you, and do a slow scan around the room, shining the light over every part of it.

If there are places, such as air vents, where a camera might be back a ways, be sure you shine the light into that area.

If you see a reflection, it very well could be the lens of a camera. Check it out carefully.

2. Several things were mentioned that can be used as a signal device. The air horns, marine or regular signal type, are good, if you can get to them quickly. And you are not near any train tracks or marine areas where they might be mistaken for a train or a boat.

I carry a whistle. If I am going somewhere that I think the odds are a bit higher than normal that I might need it, I have it right at hand. A whistle, especially if blown loudly and repeatedly will usually draw enough attention that someone will do something. Screaming does not always do so. Especially when abruptly cut off.

3. Another signal device that will usually draw attention is one of the personal alarms. Some are button activated, others are activated with a pull cord. The pull cord type can often be rigged fairly easily with in a hotel/motel room as a door alarm.

4. If you are travelling somewhere that is not very familiar to you, and you might need to take a cab, make sure to write down the cab company's number, in case you need one again in an emergency. Do not rely on your phone. You might not have it. Have it written down and on you. If you have to take a different company somewhere else, especially if you are not sure how safe the area is, write down that cab company number, too. If they took you there, it is likely they will dispatch a cab to pick you up. The cab company that took you from the airport to a nice hotel/motel just might not be willing to go to some places.

5. Another cab tip is to never put your luggage into a cab, trunk or seat, if the driver is still behind the wheel, or standing right there by the open driver's side door. There is a chance the cab might just take off with the luggage, but without you. If two or more are travelling together, this is not too difficult. One person can be inside while the other loads the luggage if the cabby does not. But do not let chivalry create a situation where the female is in the cab, while the male puts the luggage in the trunk, and the driver is still behind the wheel. The driver could take off with both the female and the luggage.

Most of these possibilities are very low. But they do happen. So be very aware.

Just my opinion.
