8:26:06 PM
Ken K7KBJ - Mobile
Rob, what makes you think Jerry poops?
8:26:30 PM
K9RVM - Rob
Listening to him mention the pooper bags.
8:27:08 PM
TWP
Can we get a running commentary from someone can type really fast?
8:27:13 PM
Ken K7KBJ - Mobile
TWP, there isn't anything wrong with the repeaters, it's the radio that is connected to the broadcastify feed that has the issue.
8:27:42 PM
TWP
Ok, I'm just guessing anyway.
Guess I need to by a cheap Baofeng to listen

Re: Prepping For Beginners - Your Emergency Vehicle Kit
« Reply #1 on: May 21, 2018, 07:40:10 PM »
Thanks Ken.

I will go through everything I can remember:

I have several vehicle kits. One is for the vehicle itself. In it I keep a extra fluids of several kinds. Oil, ATF, Power steering fluid, coolant mix, windshield wiper fluid, grease with small grease gun. Also fuses, fuse puller, spare bulbs for everything, spare serpentine belt, spare windshield wiper blades, connectors and crimper, spare headlight connectors. Other items include shop rags, paper towels, nitrile gloves, leather gloves, windshield de-icer, windshield treatment (so water rolls off), jumper cables, jack stands, set of chocks, floor jack, tire repair kit, 4-way lug nut wrench.

I have a Black & Decker Matrix battery drill with a impact wrench head and socket for the lug nuts. 12vDC/120vAC/20vLithium battery powered air compressor (uses the same B&D 20v batteries), tire pressure gauge, battery bolt ratchet, regular road flares, reflective triangle kit, a couple of head lamps, two magnetic mount flashlights,  long reach windshield cleaner/brush, long reach windshield ice scraper

I keep a 'stranded' kit in the truck for times when I might be stranded due to break down or weather. Since it is usually better to stay with a vehicle than go wandering off, I have what I need to take care of things for a few hours to a couple of day. Water, of course, some Millennium ration bars, jerky, and GORP. water flavoring/dehydration salts, wind up flashlight, toilet paper, fire kit, a couple of space blankets, small tarp, three awning poles, quite a bit of paracord and bankline

Regular carry gear includes several cargo tie downs, a cargo cross-bed locking bar, rope lifting hoist, long-load flags, an FRS/GMRS radio with NOAA weather alert function, additional water, rehydration salt tablets, small first aid kit (need to upgrade this), two fire extinguishers, bicycle helmet, goggles, knee pads, another pair of gloves, winter neck scarf, ice spike cleats for my boots, hand/foot warmers, summer cooling towel, first-aid blanket, windshield breaker/seat belt cutter secured on the dash where I can reach it, a 4-way silcock key, spare sun glasses, more bankline and paracord, spare hook cane

And I usually have my version of combo BOB/GHB. Separate topic so I will not cover it here.

I have, by necessity, come up with a few procedures that have helped me out immensely. They have made it much easier, and in a few case, made it possible at all, to do certain things that seem to crop up from time to time.

Since it is so hard for me to use the supplied tools to change a tire, I now have additional items (included in the list above) that make it much easier. One is a hydraulic floor jack so I do not have to crawl under the truck to place and use the supplied jack. I can use the B&D impact wrench to break loose tight lug nuts. If I have to use the 4-way lug nut wrench I can adjust a jack stand the right height to rest the outside leg of the 4-way on so it stays in line with the lug nut and the wrench will not bang up the nut due to it slipping off when pressure is applied. Much easier than hold up with one hand, and pushing down with the other. If need be I can put my 250 pounds of expediter weight on it with no worries about the 4-way going flying one way and me the other. If I do have to get under the truck for any reason, I have the tarp to make it a bit cleaner and drier, since it is either raining, snowing, or both, and the ground is usually muddy when I have to do something.

With a head lamp on I have the use of both hands and have light where I want it, rather than trying to fix something where the light is shining, rather than where it needs to be fixed. Nitrile gloves protect both my hands and whatever I am touching. And if anything sharp might be encountered, the leather gloves help with that. The chocks I have are not only better than the issued ones, but I have four so I can make sure the truck does not roll either direction.

A major part of me being able to do things in the summer is being able to keep cool and hydrated. Especially since the AC on my truck is on the outs again. So the cooling towel, soaked with some of the water, around my neck or on my forehead will cool me down when I take breaks (about every five or six minutes the last time I changed a tire in the one-hundred-five temperatures. Having and takin rehydration tablets and drinking lots of water let me change the tire. Took me two hours, but I did it, and did not collapse. Or die. Next time I might rig the tarp as an awning using the poles and cordage.

I consider my Smart Phone with prepping aps a good addition to the truck kit, so keep a couple of ways to recharge it in the truck. Including an adapter for the B&D 20vLithium batteries I use in the drill and air compressor.

I am probably forgetting some things, but that was most of it.

Just my opinion.
