Hi AG7BY !
Welcome

Hi AG7BY
8:09:22 PM
AG7BY
howdy all ... new to the net tonight (at least the chat)
8:09:50 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Glad you are here
8:10:33 PM
AG7BY
thx. would you say this net is mostly people associated with SNARS or another club?
8:11:16 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Many of us are members of SNARS but not all
We just like to support this awesome set of repeaters!
8:11:39 PM
TWP
RE tonight's topic. We have rice and beans (pinto mostly) all in 5 gal. buckets. No oxy absorbers, but we cycle them in about 90 days, so have not had any problems
Rob, confirm that LDS has a cannery? I know about the local pantry, but thought the cannery itself had been closed...

I am curious if it is common for preppers to think about stocking refined metals (aluminum, iron) since refining processes would be hard to replicate if a long term infrastructure were missing?
8:16:00 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Actually, I have quite a store of steel, aluminum and wood plus the tools to work with them.
If it's common? Don't really know. Might be a good topic for the net !!!
8:16:36 PM
AG7BY
... maybe it would be easy to scavenge this things ... but setting up a simple chemistry lab might be nice
8:17:48 PM
TWP
7BY, I've not heard of any, beyond stocks of sheet metal and lumber. Bulk metal for blacksmithing might make sense if you have the skill set
8:17:58 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Yes, a good chemistry lab will always guarantee a good cup of coffee! HAHAHAHA
Horse shoes would be a must and possibly a good barter item
8:18:34 PM
K9RVM
The preppers I know do keep a small general amount of wood, steel and other similar items but mostly just enough to make patches and repairs. It becomes difficult for most people who aren't sitting on large amounts of space with storage capabilities to store enough to rebuild from scratch.
8:18:53 PM
AG7BY
problems I can see would be with inabitilty to fill you welding gas tanks ... but yeah blacksmithing would work with a hot fire ...
8:19:42 PM
Ken K7KBJ
another must have is a manual drill, drill bits, sharpening stone and lots of nuts and bolts
8:20:02 PM
TWP
That speaks to making charcoal, which is not difficult
8:23:44 PM
AG7BY
charcoal = heated wood without allowing oxygen?
8:24:08 PM
TWP
Re spider bites. Does anyone know if spider antivenin is available?
Charcoal, mostly just lower oxygen. It can be done in a sealed barrel, but also just in a dirt covered fire pit.
The 'net has a lot of information on small scale charcoal operation.
8:25:59 PM
AG7BY
I think of a "preppers library" with lots of tech type books. I look for long term issues I guess
maybe a HDD copy of selected copies of Wikipedia pages ...
8:27:46 PM
TWP
7BY there are some links to downloadable library material on the NNPG.net forum. I probably have 15 GB of such, mostly PDF format, some video.
8:28:07 PM
AG7BY
twp. thx nice to know
8:28:43 PM
K9RVM
That is a big item in my preps. I keep a big library of books covering chemistry, medicine, mechanics, gardening, butchering and other basic skill set items. I always pick them up whenever I see them or Amazon alerts me with new releases of similar topics.

Re Wikipedia, you can make your own wiki server and download Wikipedia, Very large, and would take time to download.
One drawback to Wikipedia is the lack of verified information (it's open to just about anybody to edit).
8:30:42 PM
AG7BY
can't imagine how big that would be ... nice to see a variation which focuses on topics similar to what K9RVM suggested.
yes, have to take it all with a grain of salt ... so to speak
8:31:44 PM
TWP
Wikipedia was 100+GB about a year ago, I've not checked lately.
8:32:09 PM
AG7BY
not too bad ... 1 TB drive
8:33:04 PM
TWP
That's enough room for this week,<g> It only get bigger with time.
One problem is the images linked to Wikipedia, You can get just text, but the images add both good info and MUCH larger download size.
8:34:53 PM
AG7BY
good point ... have to write my web crawler to scounge the images
8:35:26 PM
TWP
Wikipedia gives you the option to download with or without images.
You don't need a webcrawler tool for that.
8:36:19 PM
AG7BY
yeah, that would be huge ... no doubt.
8:36:27 PM
TWP
Search "wikipedia download" and you find the links
8:37:28 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Wow, that's a great way to saturate your data plan !
8:38:41 PM
AG7BY
looks like torrent download is available ... so you could limit the bandwith for a longterm downloading
8:39:55 PM
TWP
RE Jerry, Stuffing mix and cornbread. They don't last long enough around here, but would be good prepper stock
8:42:30 PM
Ken K7KBJ
YAY
8:42:35 PM
AG7BY
anyone know what software is being used to host this chat room?
8:42:38 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Another net in the food tin !
Yes,
I put it together
8:42:47 PM
K9RVM
satisfactory
8:43:12 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Gimme a sec
8:43:09 PM
AG7BY
is part of a hosting plan, like an addon? or your own code?
8:43:12 PM
TWP
7BY, you might also look at buying a digital copy of an encyclopedia. The information is more like to be verified (unlike wikipedia)
8:43:12 PM
K9RVM
have a good night all
8:43:28 PM
Ken K7KBJ
It's PFPFreeChat
8:43:35 PM
AG7BY
thanks ken
8:43:44 PM
Ken K7KBJ
It was an add on
8:43:52 PM
TWP
Thank you Ken
8:43:56 PM
Ken K7KBJ
We're cheap around here !
You're welcome
Good night'
