Just checked, when you get your ham radio license, the call sign K7TWP is available !!!! You can get that one assigned to you!
Tonight's topic is Dehydrating Food, storing it and then making it ready to eat.
7:53:00 PM
TWP
No problem with the technology side, but time + money is stopping the rest of the process
7:53:45 PM
Ken K7KBJ
It's only fifteen bucks. The test takes about an hour or so, depending on how many people are there being tested.

Hi Josh
Ken; test time isn't the biggie for me. I need a month or more of study.
7:57:16 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Hey ken, twp! I dont have a dehydrator unfortunately
7:57:27 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Do you know about the "Ham Cram" and how it works? Best thing ever !
7:57:52 PM
Josh K7ZIM
I second that ken! Thats how i got my general class

Ken, don't know "ham cram" I'll look it up.
8:05:17 PM
Josh K7ZIM
So for the gurus here whats the best dehydrator youve used vs cost?
8:05:22 PM
TWP
Hi sax
8:06:06 PM

Snars puts them on. Dont know when but they are a great way to get licenced or upgraded.

hello TWP
8:08:25 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Hi all !
Tonight's topic is Dehydrating Food, storing it and then making it ready to eat.
8:08:28 PM
TWP
"Freeze Dryers" vs dehydrators - big difference in price
8:08:48 PM
Ken K7KBJ
I'm flying solo tonight so might not be in the chat room much
8:09:04 PM
TWP
We've got it on this side ken
8:09:38 PM
Ken K7KBJ
TWP, I'll email you about the ham cram
8:09:47 PM
Josh K7ZIM
I looked up those home freez dryers and dang they're like 3 grand!
8:09:49 PM
TWP
Thanks ken
Josh, that's the price I'm seeing too (ouch)
8:10:54 PM
Ken K7KBJ
We need a group of us to go in together on a freeze dryer. I'd be interested in doing that.
8:10:58 PM
TWP
I want a simple (cheap) dehydrator. I find many on the net but still shopping. I'd like to find a used unit if possible
8:11:19 PM
Ken K7KBJ
I found my two dehydrators at the thrift store.
Just a couple of dollars each !!!
8:11:41 PM
TWP
Ken, good idea. I'll check the two thrifts that I know in town
8:12:01 PM
Ken K7KBJ
They don't last long. You have to keep going and go often.
8:12:21 PM
TWP
arggh, long bike rides...
8:13:02 PM
Josh K7ZIM
I've been eyeing the nesco fd80 dehydrator. Not too spendy amd i like the top drying element as apposed to the bottom drying element omes
8:13:36 PM
TWP
Josh, which direction is the air flow? Up or down?
8:13:56 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Good question ill go look fast
8:14:37 PM
TWP
when I think about it, has to blow the hot air down from the heater
8:15:18 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Hmmm..... Greg says a colder unit works better. One without a heater.
with high air movement
8:15:29 PM
Josh K7ZIM
It says dtop down and across the trays
8:15:41 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Makes sense in our dry climate
8:16:02 PM
Josh K7ZIM
True ken.
8:16:19 PM
TWP
I'm hearing Gred now (45 sec delay)
Ask Greg what he means by "tin cans"
8:17:24 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Ya tin cans?
8:18:35 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Ok, I'll ask him to do a re-check and elaborate.
8:18:39 PM
TWP
I've used out oven, but it is really in-efficient and costly. Not something to do in the summer either
"our" oven
8:21:00 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Ive seen on pinterest about dehydrating eggs and milk too
8:23:13 PM

Hi Greg, "tin cans?"
8:23:23 PM
KG7NSV
Hi Ken
8:23:34 PM
Ken K7KBJ
Welcome!
8:24:11 PM
KG7NSV
Yes, currently I'm using 301 & 401, but buying a 307 die.
8:24:30 PM
TWP
What are those?
8:25:07 PM
KG7NSV
Green bean size can and a large tomato can
8:25:19 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Ohhhh!
8:25:21 PM
KG7NSV
Excellent for chilli
8:25:27 PM
TWP
Ah! food cans
8:25:39 PM
KG7NSV
Use a Ives-Way 400
8:25:56 PM
TWP
I'm sitting here thinking noise suppressors...
8:26:14 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Or slinky type antennas. Lol!
8:27:02 PM
KG7NSV
Yes, food cans with a pressure canner will greatly extend shelve life of all kinds of foods. LOL no not suppressors
8:27:52 PM
TWP
Is there a local (NV) source for the cans?
8:28:06 PM
KG7NSV
Other than getting some meat I can't see what a suppressor will do for food preservation.
No local source. Mine came from Canada, no pun intended
8:28:41 PM
TWP
snicker
8:28:50 PM
KG7NSV
Shipping was ridiculous
8:29:25 PM
TWP
You hang strips of jerky over the noise suppressor and burn through several magazines
I remember seeing tin cans in California, because we had a plant in the bay area.
8:31:38 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Sorry greg i have no idea about can canning.
8:31:41 PM
KG7NSV
So far I found some in California but they cost more than the cans coming from Wells Can Company. Quantities often times are hard to meet.
8:32:30 PM
TWP
I wonder where the LDS gets their cans?
They buy in bulk
8:33:40 PM
KG7NSV
I was hoping to check out the Bishops Warehouse, but the only ones I seen there were the #10 cans and the canner for that is very expensive, and in most cases I think might be too large for regular food consumption
I was hoping to fill my pantry with my award winning chili
8:35:01 PM
TWP
#10 chili will last a while...
or freeze the excess and eat it slower
8:36:35 PM
KG7NSV
Once you open that large of a can you have to consume it pretty quick. Just me and the wife and after my comment about her cooking I don't think she sit down and share a can with me
8:36:52 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Lol
8:37:08 PM
TWP
Never insult the cook, even if true
Goes for wives too

Thank you, Ken.

Thanks everyone.

Here is a link to House of Cans, in case this is a cheaper source.

Jerry, thanks for the link.

I drilled down and found these; 1 gal paint cans with "gold epoxy" lining.  They DON"T say they are food safe.

Price is perhaps lower than the Gary Company, and the minimum order quantity is lower too.
