Lol
8:04:52 PM
KG7MZO
DOH!!!
8:06:57 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Anyone try fermenting and canning?
8:07:16 PM
KG7MZO
I have done some canning.
Both water bath and pressure. Super easy
8:08:04 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Been doing it for about 6 years. Made some bomb saurkraut about 4 yrs ago. Sooo good!
Havent done pressure yet. Camt afford the canner....yet. lol
8:08:48 PM
KG7MZO
I want to get into fermenting, especially sauerkraut
8:09:10 PM
TWP
I've made sauerkraut in the past, it was excellent, much better than the commercial variety. Canned many vegetables, but nothing in the last few years.
8:09:22 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Saurkraut is super easy. I used a 5gal bucket, cabbage and sea salt.
8:09:40 PM
N7SAX
Sauerkraut is highly beneficial
8:09:51 PM
KG7MZO
I know it's easy, just haven't done it yet
8:10:19 PM
Josh K7ZIM
I turned many people to real kraut that hated the store stuff.
8:10:54 PM
TWP
Glenda, fresh harvested cabbage is preferable to store bought, The farmers market might be a good source
8:11:01 PM
KG7MZO
I found my pressure canner at a thrift store for $3
Yes, I do know that garden fresh is the best
8:11:19 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Nice find!
8:11:20 PM
TWP
$3 - I'm jealous
8:11:40 PM
KG7MZO
Brand new, still in the box. Many years ago in Colorado
Only holds 4 quarts at a time, so not quite worth it for the time and energy.
8:14:01 PM
TWP
With respect to the topic of long term storage foods: LDS Recommendation on long term (30+ years) foods. These are staples and NOT prepared foods. https://www.lds.org/topics/food-storage/longer-term-food-supply?lang=eng&old=true#1 The article also addresses foods which DO NOT store for long term and should be used up and replaced on a short cycle. I'll post this on the forum.
8:14:04 PM
Josh K7ZIM
I just combined all my bacon fat into 1, 1/2gal jar this weekend. Gotta try out pemican with bacon fat here soon.
Soda jelly!
8:15:10 PM
TWP
Soda Jelly? What is that?
8:15:24 PM
Josh K7ZIM
Facebook has tons of groups for canning, fermenting and food preserving.
8:15:54 PM
KG7MZO
Rob is right. Stay away from mylar
8:16:15 PM
Josh K7ZIM
You use soda to make jelly. Its like 16oz soda, 2 cups sugar and pectin. Then waterbath can. Cream soda is awesome!
8:16:40 PM
KG7MZO
Oh....cream soda jelly. Intriguing
8:16:58 PM
TWP
OH! Soda as in soda pop! I love cream soda!

8:34:19 PM

Thank you Ken.

Hopefully I will have time on Sunday to get some additional information up about the LTS foods and methods.

Just my opinion.
