https://oldworldgardenfarms.com/2018/02/18/potato-crates/If you are an apartment dweller, and have a "porch", you can do this in 20-30 gallon PLASTIC garbage cans. Don't use galvanized cans because of the metal leeching into your crop.
My other recommendation is to build your crates deeper, say 24-36 inches, following the same process of adding straw/hay as the plants reach higher. Stop adding when they are above the rim of the crate.
