UHT Milk as a prep food item
« on: March 28, 2017, 05:04:30 AM »
While I agree with storing UHT (Ultra High Temperature) treated milk in our prepper food stores, it has some disadvantages.

Yes, it does store well, with a lifetime measured in several months, but what you sacrifice is the ability to make some milk based foods, like cheese or yogurt.

Read this article for a balanced analysis of UHT milk:

Yes, but storing powdered whole milk takes care of that. (I think) And perhaps even low-fat/no-fat powdered.

Just my opinion.

Jerry, do you have any info on the storage life for powdered milk?

We buy it, but  use it up very quickly and I've never tried to test how long it would store.

Mountain House instant non-fat powdered milk in #10 cans has a shelf life of up to 25 years. This is the longest I have seen.

Canned whole milk powder is usually 10 years or less.

Just my opinion.

Thanks Jerry,

I don't think I will be testing the storage life, personally.  I suppose I could bequeath it... ;D
