I think this is good information on how to use commercially market food products AND home canned/preserved foods.

For home produced foods, you'll need to mark each container/package with both production and expected expiration dates.  DON"T THROW OUT THOSE WHICH HAVE EXPIRED... they have other uses.  If nothing else most foods can go into the compost heap.  Canned meats may not be suitable for direct composting, but they can be buried under plants (think about the idea of putting a fish head under each corn plant).
