Article: make a greenwood cooking grill

This is a very smart way to make a temporary cooking grill.

It is applicable to prepping for a bug-out scenario.  Assuming you have made a camp, either en-route or at your final destination.  If you have access to the green wood, then you don't need to pack and carry a metal grill.  You can also make this greenwood grill large enough to hold a lot of food, unlike the smaller backpack metal grills.

I can see this as good way to quickly (relatively) cook a large amount of meats which will extend their storage life.  For instance you may be able to kill a large animal, say a deer, and don't want to (or cannot) pack it out.  The solution is to cook it or smoke it where you are at the moment.

It will also work for quick smoking those same meats, if done at a lower temperature.  Do note that the smoke may NOT be a good idea if you are trying to stay invisible.  If you are willing to use a tarp (assuming you have an extra), build a smoke tent over a small smoldering fire.  This contains the smoke so more of it reaches the meats and may also reduce the amount of smoke released in the area.

Also note that the aroma of cooking meats will carry a long way on any breeze, which could lead to the discovery of your campsite by other displaced people.

Obviously this is not practical in an area which lacks the small bushes or trees needed for construction, but we'll assume you have scouted your area BEFORE you need to actually escape there.

Let me point out a case in point, on our last group camp out, we were located in sagebrush desert, the longest usable pieces of wood might have been 24 inches and those was scattered widely over the local area.  There was plenty of dead sagebrush for smaller fires, but not enough for a long term encampment.   In a pinch, we could have burned cow patties for cooking, but that is only possible in dry weather.  Yes, we could have stripped the local area of all wood, but that kind of makes it obvious that someone had been there...
