Unfortunately, good research is hard to get funded and is, for obvious reasons, not encouraged by the "big pharma" companies.

If you want to see documentation on the effectiveness of herbal medicines, you need to look to Europe, particularly Germany, and Japan where they are much more mainstream medicine. 

Also, to start with, I would recommend finding out about using wild and feral herbs that grow wild in you local area; then go to what you can easily grow and then medicinal spices that you have in your stores.
