Title: Calcium HypoChlorite (bleach powder / pool shock)
Post by: TWP on November 28, 2016, 03:51:32 AM
I'm assuming that we all know that Chlorine bleach is a good disinfectant.

The problem is that liquid bleach has a very limited life, it must be stored out of sunlight and it is heavy, not good for packing...

So, you can (for now) buy the chemical Calcium Hypochlorite in most hardware stores.

Calcium Hypochlorite contains Chlorine and, when mixed with water, makes a good disinfectant...

What can you do with it?  How do you store it?

FIRST, it can sterilize water.   NOT CLEAN IT, but kill any nasty bacteria, mold or larvae.  You still may need to filter the water to remove other contaminants.

SECOND, it will sterilize food containers before use.
