Of course you may not be carrying a long sword or pike, so decide which side of your body you want free when defending your castle.

Do calculate how many gallons from your moat will be needed to fill a sapper tunnel AND still leave enough water to deter approach on the surface.  Warning, your moat might simply drain away, leaving the tunnel open again.  Best to have a running stream to fill your moat.
