In the comments it points out you need air circulation for the drying,
adding an opening with a screen on both sides would help, a small fan even better.
With no way to remove moisture it can mold.

You're correct. I'd use a 2" circular saw bit in the drill. Make a set of two holes, low on each of the four sides and cover them with mesh window screen. Put one final hole high on the back side as an air exit.
