Uses for "Dead" car batteries
« on: April 02, 2017, 02:36:12 PM »
Since a Lead-Acid auto battery is usually declared "Dead" when it can no longer turn over the engine starter, there are a lot of batteries which "technically" meet that criteria.  But they still will hold a charge and run for months to years after being "officially'" deceased.

So this article gives some advice on using these old batteries in low power applications, such as lighting and air conditioning.

I will add that there are ways to rejuvenate Lead-Acid car batteries (those which are NOT sealed) and this could give you a set of batteries with close to original capacity.  Do some research on "battery rejuvenation", there are lots of articles on the 'net about this.

Warning, Lead-Acid batteries use sulphuric acid and lead, both of which are dangerous to your health.  If you are going to work with them, DO use eye protection and avoid disposal of used acid because it contains a high concentration of lead.  It will contaminate the disposal area.  You don't want to have this in your backyard, ever.
